If I fished offshore, my arse would be hurting right now

If it would be up to the feds fishing would be illegal.

Here's the thing, it is up to the Fed's. And you're right--they don't want you fishing. They don't want you driving trucks, boats, or SUVs. Or eating hamburgers, etc....

What the hell's next? Filet half the fish on the boat and throw the other half back?

Ya don't expect it to get any better, the gov't probably is just going to let the EPA keep running rampant shooting down any legitimate amount of research from NOAA. But NOAA isn't helping either with their turrible lack of information on the species in the Gulf at least.

I didn't click the link but this is bullsh*t. Snapper are way to over populated right now. What's going to end up happening is the fish are gonna start dying from being over populated and catching diseases and shite. This is the reason we are getting rid of our offshore boat and getting a bayboat to strictly fish trout and reds

Terrible. Just because the fishing in florida sucks doesn't mean the whole gom should pay for it.

Yea break the snapper seasons up by zone in the gulf.

let them put offshore platforms off all the coasts and there will be fantastic fishing gulf wide. Trying to manage a fishery as a whole without looking at regional situations is insanity. I am surprised the recreational boat builders haven't tried to file suit against NOAA for crippling their business. I would imagine that between fuel prices and miserly limits large center console sales have to be dismal.

man this shite better be sorted out soon. I hope to get another offshore boat and get back into deep sea fishing in the next few years
On this path it won't be worth owning anything larger than a bay boat.

I hope they at least don't make the absurd decision to disallow AJ fishing during red snapper season. Their logic is total shite.

I agree. Lets disallow a fish that co-habits with snapper and will inevitably be caught and die ,since you are hauling them up from 150'+, as bycatch since the season is closed.

At least we don't live in Canada where they only let you have one gun...tho that might not last much longer here

I am not sure if I am reading the article wrong or not, but it seems they are not allowing a second season and considering shortening the season next year because the "quota" was exceeded. And the "quota" is based on weight. The "quota" was exceeded because on average, the fish weighed in the survey were heavier this year than last year. This seems like a result of their own policy.
So, there is a limit preventing keeping smaller ones (ignoring that some of these will die on release). There is also a ridiculous limit on how many you can keep. So, the response as fisherman is to keep larger ones.
BUT, if you keep larger ones, the quota is more likely to be exceeded and we will have our season shortened.
THIS IS FRICKING INSANE! There is no way to win. Who in the hell is running this show?
