I have stumbled upon an interesting method of pre-hunt scent control. I have always intentionally avoided this method but after some research I have not found an argument against it. The method I am talking about is smoking your hunting gear. Gather nearby branches and leaves and light em up, then let your gear and yourself soak up the smoke.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Tell me your scent control method.

my dad used to get pissed when i would wear his hunting jacket out by the fire when i was a kid, said it would mess up the scent, but i dont know.

I was hunting gear in that no scent wash stuff. seems to work.

I thought the same. But then realized the area I hunt is surrounded by podunk towns and in these podunk towns there are open fires everywhere and the scent of smoke is thick in the air.

From what I gather, the smoke acts as a scent eliminator and a scent cover up. Something about the carbon in the smoke from the burning wood eliminates scent and also the smoke itself covers scent.

I've lit fires behind the camp and had deer walk out to see what was, or they just decided to cross right behind the camp figuring no one was home.

I try to not get to many different sents on my jackets, but I don't think smoke is a problem. Also depends on how high you hunt off the ground.

I'm thinking of hanging pine scented car air fresheners on my jacket. Should work.

the stand i hunt normally is aobut 15 ft up, but most of the deer are about 30 feet below me. My stand is on the edge of a drop off

i've already started freezing all my wife's tampons and pads. I hang them off the bottom of my climber like bloody rats.

Deer don't like smells that are distincly human. By that I mean, scents that are produced by the human body that are unigue to humans. Don't worry about gas, smoke or other chemicals. Worry about your under arms, crotch and breath.

I wash my clothes in no smellum dtergent and my body in no smellum soap then go hunt. I try to shower before every hunt, but sometimes I don't. Works for me.
