SI's Stewart Mandel's change of heart

In the preseason SI's top CFB writer Stew Mandel called LSU overrated in the preseason polls and actually predicted Arkansas would finish 10 spots ahead of LSU in the final standings. This week on his podcast he called Arky overrated and said LSU would beat Arkansas by 2-3 TD's. Gotta give a guy credit for actually paying attention to the games and not being stubborn about his preseason predictions.

IMO Stewart is one of the better CFB writers out there - you can tell he pays attention to more than just the final scores and what other writers are saying when he puts together his stuff for SI. Definitely a class act who knows college football.....

lsu can beat ark by 2-3 td's and that doesn't mean Ark is overrated. LSU is just that good. Ark could have the misfortune of having one of the best teams they've ever had at the same time Bama and LSU have super-dominant teams.
compare ARk with the rest of the BCS - they are deserving to be ranked way up there.

He did not acknowledge it. I think he's hoping people forgot that prediction. His logic was basically, LSU was lucky in a few of their wins last year, the schedule looked brutal, and the QB situation was suspect. All solid points but 10 spots below Arkansas sounded a little extreme.
But seriously, did anyone think we'd be THIS good?

The polls love Arkansas better than the computers. Sagarin's non-BCS rating (the one that takes into account MOV) has Arkansas 7th. Vegas has them as them tied for the 9th best team which basically means that if teams ranked 2-8 came to Baton Rouge there would be a closer spread than the LSU-Ark game.

Picking LSU - as most CFB experts did - to underachieve this season was almost a no-brainer. We were a preseason #3 with a HUGE question mark at QB, and (I'd argue) an unproven O-line. One look at our schedule points to at least three losses, and maybe we lose one we shouldn't. So preseason #3 notching a 9-4 record? There you go.
Stewie has grown into his column. He was borderline baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad when he started - way to much fluff and too little analysis. I like the little nerd.

Mandel is usually pretty Pro-LSU, I know he likes Miles and his "unique" style since he is not a run of the mill coach.
