If anybody would do something crazy, it would be Swag. But I am afraid that his comments, while understandable, will ultimately be counter-productive. He pretty much gave a perfect plan for "How to get under the skin of an already volatile player."

Isn't he like the only black player in the tournament?

He may be killed. People of the former Soviet Union tend to not think highly of black people.

You can ease your mind with the knowledge that the vast majority of Italians are not racist. This is probably difficult for people from America, particularly the south, where one never encounters a single loudmouth racist to get a handle on though.

While they are definitely racist, it's more to do with outsiders. They don't like immigrants, no matter how white your skin is. They don't hold a candle to spain on the racist scale.

Italy striker who took the name of his foster parents will be known as Mario Barwuah-Balotelli now

UEFA's official tournament list shows that the forward has registered 'Barwuah Balotelli' as his shirt name.

Ghanian name on Shirt

I wonder if he is now closer to his birth parents or if this is a big to the racist fans of Poland and Ukraine?

That's really the salient point you make. Strict racism is different in Italy than the US due to extremely different histories of race in both countries. I've found Italians to be less concerned in general about "skin color" per se than most Americans due to this but much more concerned about "culture". For example, a "black" American or German would usually, say, be accepted much more readily into a family than an Albanian who may "look ethnically Italian".

What you encounter a lot more often is the exact "fear mongering" you mention and immigration dynamics is the catalyst. The far right political parties in Italy play up ethnicity/race to the hilt and, as you can imagine, there's even more anxiety over illegal immigration there than in the USA.

In the USA, most illegal immigrants at the very least find work even if taxes etc are at issue whereas in Italy they are mainly unemployed or involved in illegal activities ranging from fake fashion knockoffs to drug smuggling/prostitution.

When you add that to a culture that is infamously protective of traditions and resistant to change-- which is, by the way, the main reason American tourists etc love Italy and flock there by the millions -- you have a situation ripe for fear mongering.

Unfortunately, this involves soccer because, unlike in the US, most ultras groups are just as much "political" activists and usually the most ignorant ones at that regardless of whether they're far right or far left.
