The one that meets my needs the best, obviously.

If you want specific advice you need to tell us specifically your situation.

The one with the most cash rewards. Google and you will find a list to chose from.

I don't agree. The cards that use airlines miles or hotel points are usually a better deal, especially if you like to travel.
I use an American Express Hilton card and a Visa Southwest card.

You need to check out the flyertalk forums. Its their specialty over there. I also like the points guy.

I'm glad this thread was started, I was thinking about getting a credit card...I don't need a big limit and plan to pay it off entirely each month, my only fun activities I do are playing golf and following sports (I need more hobbies, I know)

what's the best beginner CC for me? I have no idea where to begin

check out Chase Sapphire or Starwood Amex. They both rate pretty well.

Hilton Amex > Starwood Amex

A good starter card would be the citi forward.

5 % back on restaurants and amazon and it's made to be a student card, so moderate credit will be more likely to be accepted.

What are the advantages? The points programs seem pretty different, hard to compare.

You get a higher return on a %age basis.

It was discussed in another thread.

Also: Hilton > Starwood for choices to use them.

Look around for the rewards program that works best for you, as well as what kind of interest rate you can get.

You should pay it off every month, but interest rate matters if you get in a bind at any time.

I have Merrill Lynch Visa and Amex, which have decent rewards programs that are points-based. I don't like a cash back card because I'd just spend the cash, whereas my points accumulate and I'll actually put them toward something useful like furnishing my house or putting gas in my car.

If you travel a lot (or would like to) Capital One Venture isn't a bad deal.

Someone mentioned Chase Sapphire. My fiance' has that and loves it.
