Learning to cook

So I recently moved to Seattle and I miss my South LA favorites. The food up here is good, but just doesn't hit the spot. So I'm just gonna have to learn to make it myself.
My question to the FD board is where do I start. Gumbos, étouffée, etc sound too complicated to start with. With recipes? And if so, what's a good resource for them?

Try the recipe thread on this board. Lots of good info there.

get on Amazon and order "River Road Recipes" Volumes 1 and 2. Chef Paul Prudhomme's Louisiana Kitchen(I think this is the title) is also and a good book to have

Those dishes you mention are not hard. If you're worried about a roux for gumbo, search for "oven roux" on this board. I had a thread a few weeks ago. It's so easy. The rest of making gumbo is easy. Let us know what you find hard and we can help.
