In the years since his retirement, Michael Jordan has become the standard by which all other NBA superstars are measured, regularly inciting negative considerations of such amazing talents as Kobe Bryant and LeBron James simply because they haven't been able to match some of MJ's loftiest accomplishments. It's unfair, in a way, but also a measure of just how great Jordan was. In comparison, today's stars seem to be lacking something.

Yet, as Jordan has been elevated to that level, he's taken on the image of a god, a sort of supreme being apart from all other basketball players. It's a persona that mostly doesn't fit with how Jordan actually played, particularly in his younger days. At both ends, Jordan seemed to be in attack mode, playing with a ferocity and sheer competitive drive. He was a continual presence, imposing himself on the action. He did not play with any sort of cool remove.

Luckily, YouTube exists and has the capability to remind us of just what it was like to watch Jordan attack the basket. Marvel, then, at the nine-minute highlight mix above (via TBJ and Reddit), in which His Airness finishes at the rim in virtually every possible way. It shows not just how great Jordan was, but how vicious and resourceful he was. It gives him new life apart from the legend.

You know one of the most obvious things about that reel is? That despite being bumped in most of those drives, on only a VERY FEW occasions did Jordan end up on the floor. He finished the play in such a way so as to land on his feet so that he could be ready to play D.

That seems so foreign in today's NBA...

I will add that on a lot of those shots that werent whistled for a foul, they would have been called for one today.

What separates his finishing ability is just the supreme touch he had around the rim.

Such a great feel for how to kiss it off the glass and absorb contact.

That's not usually talked about with most "finishers." Usually the ideal is something that can take a foul and still power it down, but Jordan really mastered finger rolls and other touch shots around the rim.

And unlike the stars in the game today, he rarely looked toward the ref after the finish in hopes of getting a call when there was no whistle

Hard to complain when you get every single call every night. I love MJ but he was favored by the refs, no question.

When you go hard to the rim, and have the reputation of dunking on folks, defenders tend to hesitate before attempting to block your shot. If you are on help defense, and see Mike get a step on his defender, you get that " oh shite I could get posterized" feeling.

Jordan led the NBA in shot attempts in 9 different seasons.

He led the NBA in free throw attempts just once

You get the feeling Jordan would have had it easier today because half would unintentionally get out of his way by flopping to the ground.

I was with you up until that. That comment has to be satire... he all but invented intimidating referees who didn't give him every call

Wait. All the 18-year-olds who told me LeBron is the GOAT had convinced me that all MJ did was shoot fadeaways. It was even confirmed in a 30 second YouTube video from 1998.

a couple of dunks and 9 minutes of layups.

That was like a WNBA greatest plays reel.

Jordan probably had the prettiest game of any player I've ever seen. Like, if basketball were like diving, figure skating, mogul skiing, or any other sport where they give points for style and form...Jordan would have gotten 10s all around (yes, even from the Russian judge).
