Alaska

Just curious, why aren't more southern states in the top 10 best states for taxes list? I'd have expected to more than one state (FL) there.

Well, we aren't in the bottom 10, so I consider it a win.

Texas is always touted on here yet isn't in the top 10

Not surprising. Property taxes are quite high here in the populated areas. No income tax, though. Where TX shines is there are almost no business taxes. $0 under $1Million in revenue.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that a lot of essential items at the grocery store aren't taxed here in TX.

The property taxes can be high depending on where you are like you said.

I might be moving your way pretty soon buddy

So what are the best areas of Alaska to live in? I know its beautiful but the idea of weeks without sunlight throws me off.

NH's state "income tax" applies only to interest and dividend income, so that 5% is very misleading. You can make $500k a year in salary and not pay a penny of state income tax on it.

I am not quite understanding their methodology. They seem to equate a low (or none) state income tax as being better than a low Property tax. No one ever lost their farm to state income taxes, high property taxes especially in rural states are a big problem for Farmers. Alabama has one of the lowest property tax set ups. Most of the states with a 1 in income tax have much higher property taxes.

I'm shocked California didn't make it in the worst list. Around LA, the taxes are the worst in the nation, and I don't think its really that close.

Nor should it be. Their property taxes are high.

One of my Texas colleagues has a similar lifestyle as I do and we figured out that he pays around the same in net taxes and usage fees than I do, here in Louisiana - and Louisiana isn't on that list either.

It was #3 in the worst list. Probably not worse because Prop 13 keeps a lid on property taxes.
