I need a new cell phone. Any recommendations?

First, the situation. My current phone just isn't up to snuff. I like it, but it's really holding me back from doing things more effectively. So, I need a new one.
The problem is my current phone isn't very old and I don't have an upgrade available through my carrier.
So, what are my options? My carrier is AT&T. I guess I'm asking for any suggestions on a nice phone that isn't ridiculously high priced from a msrp standpoint since I can't get a discount on it through my carrier.
Should I look at unlocked phones? I don't even know what an unlocked phone is.
Please help. TIA.

Wow. That was pretty easy. Thanks.

Requires a micro sim, so if you have a larger sim card you will need to either go get a micro from the ATT store or cut it down yourself.

I have this EXACT same problem. Same carrier and all. You can just buy one of those Nexus phones and put the sim card in and you are good to go??

Same question Sabi.
Q: Is there a sim card in an iPhone?

Yes sir. As long as you have the smaller sim card that is it. If you have to trim it all you will need is a razor blade and print a template off the internet. It is really easy to cut them.

I don't know. I've never owned one.
I have a BlackBerry Z10. I like it, but the lack of apps for my business is getting annoying.
I guess I need to go back to Android.

Depends on the carrier/iPhone model. If you have a sim card the outline of the tray will be visible on the right (i think) side of the phone with a small hole next to it

HTC One (new model)They can do a second upgrade on your account (forget what it is called) or just add another line to your account. That will cost you $10 a month. On that new line, you can get a free upgrade right away and use it on your current #. The extra line just sits there unused or link your old phone to it and give to to someone in your family.
No, you don't know anything about it, you should stay away.

Yeah, but I don't have an upgrade available.

Pay the few dollars it is to open another line on your account, get the phone u want with the new line and just put your original sim into the new phone. Wil cost a little more a month that way but u could always close a line when it reaches upgrade date hassle free, no early termination fee.

The S5 is still going to cost him $200 with a new line. And then he has another line to pay for.

Switch to tmobile and let them buyout your contact.

anyone have any luck calling ATT and telling them you are going to switch to T-Mobile and let them pay the fee so you can get a new phone and then ATT let you upgrade on the spot? Thinking about the T-Mobile switch anyway...

Wait a few months and get the iPhone 6.
How old is your phone that you don't even have upgrade eligibility as part of your contract? Is it a prepaid or something?
Also, AT&T now has two different types of upgrade options. There's the old type where you get a new phone for a special price as a reward for renewing your contract and there's the new method, which I believe entails paying a monthly fee of some type in exchange for either a free or discounted phone.
