The Neil Young classic (studio) has become a favorite for guitar-centric live performances throughout the years, especially in both jam band and alternative circles. Who did it best? Add any others you enjoy.
Neil Young (Rust Never Sleeps era)
Neil Young (2001)
Joe Satriani, Steve Kimock, Grace Potter,Reed Mathis, Willy Waldman and Stephen Perkins
Built to Spill
J Mascis
Anders Osborne
Gov't Mule
Pearl Jam ft. Neil Young
Phil Lesh & Friends ft. Anders Osborne & Marco Benevento
Mercury Rev
Warren Haynes w/ Dave Matthews
Sleazy Horse (Japanese band)

Couldn't find a Youtube of it, but Widespread Panic's version in 2001 in Charlotte was probably their best version.
I still like Gov't Mule's on their Live With a Little Help album the best. Built to Spill's a close second.

That is what prompted this thread. Their album Live is sick.

Cary Hudson/Blue Mountain have always done a great version...

Great song musically and some of the most insipid lyrics ever written. Supposedly he wrote the song while still in high school.

Neil Young might be the most overrated guitarist of all time
Don't get me wrong I love my boy Neil, but he is not very good
But on this subject, yea that Built to Spill cover is titz

This statement couldn't be much more ridiculous. It's not his best work, but it's far from insipid and even farther from most insipid ever.
As a point of reference

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but... Wow. Seriously? You're gonna need to provide more to back up such a statement.

"Hate was just a legend
And war was never known
The people worked together
And they lifted many stones"
Sorry, but these lyrics are just bad and wildly inaccurate historically. The Aztecs were pretty damn bloodthirsty and war was a way of life for them.

Fair enough, but none of that is "insipid."

Always been a fan of the Dave Mathews version.

No one gives a shite about his guitar playing ability. You don't listen to Neil to hear him shred.
To answer the OP, any version with WH. He nails it.
