Wanting to learn Spanish, has anyone had success with Rosetta Stone or Hello talk? List any other methods besides moving or visiting another country.

I tried Rosetta stone. Wasn't for me. Boring and I lacked the discipline to sit there for hours every day. Plus I felt like it would've been a lot better if it provided a base of knowledge to build on.

I've been doing Rosetta Stone for both Spanish and Mandarin. It's really fun and it sticks with you.

If price is a concern, I guess Duolingo is alright, but it's not the same.

Not a bad idea for reading and writing recognition.

The interesting thing (and I guess the selling point) about Rosetta Stone, is that they NEVER come out and say "Madre means mom, and Padre means dad." They use pictures so you can associate what you read and hear with real life objects - similar to how you learned your native language when you were a toddler.

That's how Duolingo is now. I've used RS in small pieces in the past

This is actually a good idea.

For those not in the know:

Pimsleur is an old school approach in that it is all audio based. This makes it much easier to pick up on the natural flow of conversation and replicate it. It's main downsides are that because it's all audio you have no knowledge on the spelling or written word. Also what you learn is what you learn. There is no updated database and the vocabulary is extremely limited. The entire course might be 3-4 chapters in a textbook.

Duolingo is the new visual based learning. It's oinline so it's constantly getting better. IT'S FREE. Mulitiple languages. It's a brilliant program. BUT! The actual sentence structures are very poor and the way it teaches to build and contruct a conversation needs a lot of work.

Rosetta Stone is more like Duolingo, but more in depth with it's added features. Having the option to Skype with a linguist to help train you naturally is a huge plus. It's main con is that it's insanely expensive, for what you pay here it would be cheaper (and significantly better) to hire someone to teach you the language 1-on-1 for a few months.

I use assimil . And I recommend it over all other methods.

Pimsleur is also really good for quick pronunciation accuracy.
