Looking for a new job for the first time on 8 years. Was asked this and really have no idea what to respond with. What are the chances I ask too much and it hurts my chances. I know I'm not going to get what I was making but really want this because it will be a great learning environment

They asked what was my bare min

It's a good idea to google what the position typically makes, so you can ball park the salary and have an expectation.

Always give a reasonable range if you're not sure.

Nothing absurd like $30,000 - $100,000

Say you want 6 figures or you are walking, trust me on this.

Tell them you have something they won't get anywhere else.

What if I was making twice as much as everything I've found doing research

This, I sold myself short on my last job by not looking up this information beforehand

I'd just state what you would want, but it would be negotiable for the right job or something you'd want to do.

You should be able to find information for national averages for different careers on BLS. Glass door for particular companies though I'm not sure how reliable that is.

Thanks. To be honest I was paid more than the average so I guess it's just disappointing

Glass door has always seemed way off for my particular career, even though I'm not in an extremely specialized field

My guess is that only the younger generation provides data so it's slanted more towards entry level positions

Tell him you are looking for 20-25% more than what you are really looking for, based on average salaries for the position.

Look up industry averages (they are very well published no matter what your field is) and add at least 10% but probably more DOE and the quality of the company.
