Free Electric is a hybrid bike that spins two flywheels, which turn a generator that charges a battery. An hour of pedaling can meet a rural household’s electricity needs for 24 hours, according to Manoj Bhargava, CEO of 5-hour Energy maker Living Essentials. This includes running lights, a small fan and charging mobile devices.

quote:

Made out of regular bike parts, the Free Electric is designed so that any bike mechanic could easily fix it. Initially, the bikes will be targeted at India. Bhargava aims to have a first batch of 10,000 bikes distributed by the third quarter of this year. Pricing will range from free to $250, depending on people’s ability to pay for the bike, he added.

I guess those night time photos from ISS of Earth are about to change.

Somebody do the math for me and figure out if I'm better off paying my current electric bill or paying a worker minimum wage to ride the bike for me.

No, no he didn't. Unless he can peddle as fast and as hard as a 10hp diesel engine.

if this is legit, they will buy this invention from him just to "kill" it so that so many people don't get put out of a job.

There's a very interesting documentary about this guy and his "think lab". He hires people to develope and problem solve items like this. Can't remember the name, but it was a good watch. The guy wants to improve society with his wealth.

He already owns 5 hr energy. He isn't hurting.

He's a super cool guy. Carolla had him on his podcast a month or so ago and he is the definition of a problem solver.

Good luck finding someone sober enough to ride it.

Exactly my thought...make a low-energy using device that's plugged into the wall to constantly spin the pedals.

INFINITE POWER!?!?!? (until something breaks)

A 150 pound person cycling at a "normal" rate for 1 hour burns 680 calories. That translates to 2487 Watt-seconds, which equals 41 watt-hours. 41 watt-hours divided by 24 means you could power a light of less than TWO WATTS for 24 hours at 120 volts.

To put that in perspective, most incandescent light bulbs were 60 watts. You power a 60 watt light bulb for far less than 1 hour by pedaling for 1 hour.

Your whole family pedaling furiously 24/7 couldn't do the laundry.

This is junior high physics. Clearly making energy drinks doesn't require much education.

But really.

Say this catches on, I'll invent like a "game genie" type of thing that pedals for you.
