Don Henley, easily... such a pompous jackass.

Here's how Henley responded when a columnist remarked on the cringe-worthy "so I called up the captain, 'please bring me my wine'. He said, 'We haven't had that spirit here since 1969" from Hotel California... specifically that wine is not a spirit:

"Thanks for the tutorial and, no, you're not the first to bring this to my attention—and you're not the first to completely misinterpret the lyric and miss the metaphor. Believe me, I've consumed enough alcoholic beverages in my time to know how they are made and what the proper nomenclature is. But that line in the song has little or nothing to do with alcoholic beverages. It's a sociopolitical statement. My only regret would be having to explain it in detail to you, which would defeat the purpose of using literary devices in songwriting and lower the discussion to some silly and irrelevant argument about chemical processes."

So many of his other songs are rife with "hey, aren't I clever with words" high school-type conceit that I can barely stand the man.

Best and most intelligent lyricist? Paul Simon.

I've always found his lyrics to be stupid and not pretentious.

"Something something YOU WANTED THE QUEEN OF SPAIDS HURRR something something BUT YOU GOT A JACK OF DIAMOOOOONDS DURR DURR"

I always thought spirit was interpreted as an emotional type attitude not an alcoholic beverage. Was I giving Henley too much credit?

Bono and he could also be labeled as most pretentious and this is coming from a U2 fan.

It's a still life water color,
Of a now late afternoon,
As the sun shines through the curtained lace
And shadows wash the room.
And we sit and drink our coffee
Couched in our indifference,
Like shells upon the shore
You can hear the ocean roar
In The Dangling Conversation
And the superficial sighs,
The borders of our lives.

And you read your Emily Dickinson,
And I my Robert Frost,
And we note our place with bookmarkers
That measure what we've lost.
Like a poem poorly written
We are verses out of rhythm,
Couplets out of rhyme,
In syncopated time
And The Dangling Conversation
And the superficial sighs
Are the borders of our lives.

Yes we speak of things that matter,
With words that must be said,
"Can analysis be worthwhile?"
"Is the theater really dead?"
And how the room is softly faded
And I only kiss your shadow,
I cannot feel your hand,
You're a stranger now unto me
Lost in The Dangling Conversation
And the superficial sighs
In the borders of our lives.

I always thought spirit referred to somebody with pluck and verve, either oblivious to their inevitable fate within the hotel, or very cognizant of it (and decided to have the best time they can before the inevitable ensues). I guess I gave him too much credit.

Well, the columnist was indeed an a-hole for asking such a question. I don't see how anyone who is relatively familiar with the mystique behind that song could not interpret spirit as something apart from the alcohol being served.

All of this reminds of the exchange between Kurt Loder & Jewel back in 1998 in an encounter not very different from the one you mentioned.

quote:

“There’s a line you have,” Loder said, “’There are nightmares on the sidewalks/there are jokes on TV/ there are people selling thoughtlessness with such casualty.’ Casualty doesn’t mean that, does it? Casualty’s like a guy gets his arm blown off. I mean isn’t that…”

“That’s a type
of casualty,” Jewel said.

“What?” Loder asked.

“It’s a type of casualty that …” she responded.

“No, really. I thought you were trying to say casualness,” he said.

“No, casualty,” Jewel affirmed.

“Oh, OK,” Loder said, “All right. Are you a tech person? Do you take computers on the road, do you log on, e-mail?”

“No, I’m a bit archaic,” Jewel confessed, “I mean, I still write everything by hand. It’s quite archaic.”

“Wow,” Loder replied.

“It is wow,” she said, “I’m dyslexic as heck. I mean, I just can’t type well.”

“Really?” Loder said, “that’d be a problem for a writer.”

“It is a bit of problem,” Jewel said, “I mean, putting the book together. Everything was done by hand. I had to recopy it legibly to get it…”
“That explains casualty probably,” he said.

“That probably does,” Jewel said, “[you’re a] smart-arse for pointing that out. Next topic.”

“I don’t know,” Loder answered, “I just want to help.”

“Publicly,” she said, laughing. “If you wanted to help, you could have taken me aside, in a little corner.”

And as far as I can see I just need privacy
Plus a whole lot of tree, frick all this modesty
I just need space to do me get a world that they're tryna see
A Stella Maxwell right beside of me
A Ferrari I'm buyin' three
A closet of Saint Laurent, get what I want when I want
'Cause this hunger is driving me, yeah
I just need to be alone, I just need to be at home
Understand what I'm speaking on if time is money I need a loan
But regardless I'll always keep keepin' on
frick fake friends, we don't take L's we just make M's
While y'all follow, we just make trends
I'm right back to work when that break ends

Sonny sits by his window and thinks to himself
How it's strange that some rooms are like cages
Sonny's yearbook from high school
Is down from the shelf
And he idly thumbs through the pages
Some have died
Some have fled from themselves
Or struggled from here to get there
Sonny wanders beyond his interior walls
Runs his hand through his thinning brown hair

In ancient times...
Hundreds of years before the dawn of history
Lived a strange race of people... the Druids

No one knows who they were or what they were doing
But their legacy remains
Hewn into the living rock... Of Stonehenge

Stonehenge! Where the demons dwell
Where the banshees live and they do live well
Stonehenge! Where a man's a man
And the children dance to the Pipes of Pan

Hey!

Stonehenge! 'Tis a magic place
Where the moon doth rise with a dragon's face
Stonehenge! Where the virgins lie
And the prayers of devils fill the midnight sky

And you my love, won't you take my hand?
We'll go back in time to that mystic land
Where the dew drops cry and the cats meow
I will take you there, I will show you how

Oh!

And oh how they danced
The little children of Stonehenge
Beneath the haunted moon
For fear that daybreak might come too soon

And where are they now?
The little children of Stonehenge
And what would they say to us?
If we were here... tonight

Except that it doesn't actually work as a double entendre since wine is not a spirit.

KAYNE WEST

How is this even debateable? And I cringe even calling him a lyricist.

Perhaps he had no intention of constructing a double entendre. As listeners, we can only assume what was his authorial intent.
