J. Jones raises fist toward the face of and Ecuadorian player and all the commentators say that though their was no intent to punch the letter of the law is that he should get a red card.

Italy defender Chiellini takes a foul throw (raising his rear foot)Italy converts the throw into the game winning goal. Commentators say something like the foul shouldn't be called its just the way the game is played and then proceed to blame the Swedish defenders for the goal.

The letter of the law should be the letter of the law. Fully enforce one law you should fully enforce them all.

I know I know maybe I am mixing to many things. Two separate tournaments, two separate networks but one set of rules..

In all sports you have things that become convention to not call unless they're very exaggerated.

Foul throws are almost like traveling in the NBA where it becomes almost shocking (and seemingly unfair) to see one arbitrarily called.

On the other hand, you have things that are "points of emphasis" for officials and therefore called quite closely for a period of time (like hand checking in college basketball, target in college football etc etc etc. . . )

I think Jones was a combination of unlucky and dumb to step right into a call that there was seemingly a strong directive to enforce tightly.

Thank you for having an actual adult discussion about this. I have been watching these tournaments and had only really seen a couple foul throws prior to this one at this level of play and they were called. It might of been a function of camera work and not really paying a lot of attention to throwins.

I watch a lot of Serie A and there is this one English commentator who gets really out of sorts about 4 or 5 foul throws every single match.

He's always completely aghast that players at this level get away with it so often.
