When Largent retired, he held all major NFL receiving records, including: most receptions in a career (819), most receiving yards in a career (13,089), and most touchdown receptions (100). He was also in possession of a then-record streak of 177 consecutive regular-season games with a reception. He also holds the distinction as the first receiver in NFL history to achieve 100 touchdown receptions in his career.

Some people might not have them in their top 5 WR.

Rice
Tim Brown
Irvin
Swann

He is in the HOF, but I see your point he's not the first or even fifth name you think of in terms of GOAT WR.

He played for an expansion team and for 14 seasons won 10 games or more two times. Not going to stick in the public consciousness with that sort of run.

His first 8 season they averaged 6 wins a season, year 9 they won 12.

I see I got a downvote already . I'm not hating on the guy, but that's a good reason why people forget about him a lot.

The stats he put up with having Zorn and Krieg as QB and Chuck Knox as HC makes them more impressive.

The underrated argument isn't about his awards, it is in comparison to other HOF great receivers.

I think there is a case to be made that he is underrated.

I think he was properly rated during his time. The 1980's All NFL team has 2 WRs, Largent & Rice. The evolution of the game and the yards receivers put up now doesn't do him any favors concerning his legacy.

don't think that's the best site to use ... they have swann ahead of him and i doubt there are many other sites that have swann that high ... the nfl site has him 5th, ahead of TO, LF and Johnson ... given his longevity and records at the time, that sounds about right ... LINK

I would say Cliff Branch.

He dominated but deep balls were seen as an anomaly back then...a trick, a ruse.

Branch should get the praise Moss does.

Branch was the most potent and feared deep threat in the 70s.

he was appreciated in his time.

not being the best of the best is no crime.

players from before you saw them are never appreciated.
Chuck Bednarik was the last two way all pro football player.
mLb and center

few on TD heard of him.

That's true.

Every kid knew and talked about Largent during games of recess football or smear the queer.

One kid even tried to claim he was his nephew because his last name was Largent.

Largent was famous on the playground in the 80s.

He's not underrated. We all thought he was the best receiver before Rice.

Best WR before Rice? No they didn't. There was no consensus opinion

People would claim Berry, Largent was climbing but was never consider the greatest.

At the time he was still behind Carmichael in games w reception, and the Marks Bros were getting headlines. Rice came along and he was given the title.

The elite WR list was
Hudson
Warfield
Swann
Biletenkof, he got more credit after he retired

Dude we were kids and not historians.

All I'm saying is Steve Largent was a big deal to 80s kids.

We talked about Montana, Marino, Marcus Allen, Largent, Winslow.

That was it on the playground.

Your playground was strange then.

We got Tulsa stations even and didn't want to be Largent.

It was Swann, Hill, Fun Bunch, Marks Bros, if we were WR at all. It was always RB or QB
