USMNT preferred formation and XI snapshot

We're less than two years away from the World Cup and now just 2 months away from the Hex. While there is still PLENTY of time for players off the radar to still make a case for a ticket to Russia, we are now starting to get into the real part of this cycle.
With that in mind, I'm interested to see how everyone here feels about where the US is right now in terms of formations, tactics and talent.
For me, it starts with the full-immersion of Pulisic into the squad. There was a tweet by Shinguardian last night saying how he couldn't recall a time when players were actively "looking" to get a player the ball like the US did for CP last night since Donovan in 2002 WCQ cycle.
A little hyperbole sure, but not much. It's near insane to levy these expectations on a 17 year old, but it's getting to the point where it may be unavoidable. He makes everyone around him so much better and with a playmaker like that in fold and it gives us lineup flexibility.

I feel like when we roll out a 4-3-3, this is our ideal XI. Bradley is your dedicated 6, it plays right into Jones' game, giving him free roam as the 8 with a reborn-Kljestan as the 10. I get that it was just 2 games against one shitty CONCACAF team and another against a mid-level CONCACAF team, but Kljestan was still impressive, particularly with his chemistry with Pulisic. I don't know if he can keep it up all the way to Russia, but so far in this cycle, him and Nagbe have been pivotal in linking up play form one third to another, and right now Jurgen is favoring Kljestan.
What I don't like about the 4-3-3 though is that, I really want Bobby Wood on the field with Jozy, but shifting him out wide isn't the ideal spot for him. Wood is so damn good at making runs that won't necessarily make him open for a pass, but it'll make someone else open. We saw a lot of that last night against T&T. Playing him out wide on the wing where he will often have to tack back for Yedlin, it would seem a tad counter-productive for what Wood is. Honestly, Gyasi Zardes would be a legitimate option at that spot, as well as Bedoya due to their workrate making up for technical abilities.
Which leads me right to the 4-4-2.
Only real change is shifting Wood inward and putting Bedoya in for Jones. Bedoya does the dirty work up and down the flank, it won't get noticed, but it allows cover for others to do what they do best. Every team needs players like him for true success.
What's crazy is that I think we're finally entering an era where we don't "need" Dempsey, which is kind of sad considering the circumstances of his health and how good he was for us in the Copa, but it may be time to move on, at least in terms of him being an automatic spot in the XI. Also, I think we'll be seeing the debut of Lynden Gooch really soon and his versatility can spell doom for guys like Bedoya, Jones and maybe even Bradley.
I've done enough rambling, what say the SB?

I haven't had time to watch these last few matches, but I really would love to see a strong counterattacking 3-5-2 from the USMNT when they play the big boys.
If the 4-3-3 has been working, let it ride. I am also a fan of a 4-4-2.

I would too, just because Yedlin and Fabs would be the perfect wing backs for it, but Jurgen never gave it a fair shot.

I would love that 4-4-2 if Some frick would emerge at LB and we could put Fabian where Bedoya is

I've been saying this for a while. As you said, we have the perfect pair of wing backs for this formation and both Cameron and Besler are capable of stretching wide.
Would be so great.
But yeah, not happening.

Some frick is still waiting in the wings and is ready to be called upon if need be, but for now, I'm good with keeping Fabs at LB considering that we've got more outside mid talent coming through the ranks than we do outside backs.

Took me way too long to figure out who Guzoward is.

The lack of opportunities given to Lichaj and Villafana has been one of the most frustrating parts of the Klinsmann regime, along with his complete denial of American creative midfielders until this week.

I couldn't believe he didn't call Villafana for those January games. He was a huge part in Portland winning MLS Cup last season. Unfortunately, he's eligible to play for Mexico, but they don't seem to rate him.
Alex Zendejas basically shot the US the middle finger and flipped to Mexico after FC Dallas spent years developing him into their next star. Hope we don't lose Villafana the same way. No reason at all he doesn't at least deserve a look. It's not like LB is a position we're loaded at. It's our biggest question mark, and has been since Bocanegra retired.

It was a question mark before that, too.
As for another LB option, Garza has looked good for us during his call ups. He just can't stay healthy with Xolos. I think Brandon VIncent has a chance to work his way into the fold, too.

that looks great
have we essentially given up on Fab ever playing in the midfield or on the wing? I know Jurgen this Jurgen that but frankly do we even have a legitimate alternative as of today?
granted things can change in two years. drastically in fact

He played there last week vs SVG, and if Garza ever comes back from his injury, then we can put him back at LB like we did immediately after Brazil, but for now Fabs is our best option at LB and there really isn't anyone else that's challenging that (or Jurgen is giving a chance to challenge).

I need to try to find a replay of the SVG match, I got caught up at work and couldn't get a radio feed but that's promising. I like Garza a lot. just wish we had more wing backs in the upcoming talent pool.
has Fab been getting minutes in Germany so far?

Would be really nice to be able to slot someone else in at LB and move Johnson over.
I hope no one is penciled in as the starting striker. Make them earn it every time.

He's usually a starter, but he played the last 30 minutes in Gladbach's only game this season.

Please tell me there is someone to take Michael Bradley's spot for Russia in 2 years. He's already old, slow as frick and turns it over too easily. Someone has to take his spot right?

He's 29and will be 30/31 depending on what month the WC is held. Plenty fast enough as a #6. His short passing needs work, but he still has the best long ball on the team.

This can't be true right?
Who COULD be a couple candidates that might surpass him in the next two years?
