Honestly, there is nothing but speed in that video. His playing basically has no emotion to it. He also neglects his toms for extremely long stretches and seems to only use them for fills.

I'd much rather listen to Gavin Harrison play:

Aenesthetize

Have this discussion with musician friends all the time. To me speed has nothing to do with being a great drummer or being the best drummer. Don't get me wrong, I love watching guys like Peart, Sexton, Bozio and Beauford. But being a great drummer has way more to do with that you play and where it fits in with the music.

I prefer a drummer that can sit in the pocket all day over a chop machine.

All of this. Blast beats do nothing for me.

If the contextual definition of "best drummer" is limited to how many notes he can squeeze into a measure, then I suppose he would be in the running. In a broader sense, I'd choose one of these guys:

It's entirely subjective, but I think

John Blackwell
Danny Carey
Carter Beauford
Stanton Moore

Are my top "active" drummers out there. Speed is impressive, but has very little to do with being a great drummer.

To quote John Lennon, "Ringo isn't even the best drummer in the Beatles."

From the L.A. Times
quote:

As part of his in-depth research, Lewisohn also has debunked a humorous knock on Starr’s drumming abilities, long attributed to John Lennon. For decades, people and media outlets have repeated the anecdote about Lennon being asked whether he considered Starr to be the best drummer in the world. The oft-quoted response: “He’s not even the best drummer in the Beatles.”

While it sounds like the kind of acerbic comment that might have come out of Lennon’s mouth, Lewisohn says no.

“The London Times newspaper quoted John Lennon ‘famously saying that Ringo wasn’t even the best drummer in the Beatles.’ John Lennon never said that, famously or otherwise, and that is the London Times quoting him,” Lewisohn said, making a point about his motivation for trying to separate fact from Fab Four mythology.

“For me, it’s [a case of tracking down] when did he say this? I’ve heard every John Lennon interview, I’ve read every John Lennon interview, I never saw that quote. So when did he say it, let alone when did he famously say it?” he said. “I determined to get to the bottom of it. And it’s actually a TV comedian’s joke from three years after John was killed, in 1983. So John Lennon never said it -- and wouldn’t have said it.”

Damn it I liked my life better thinking that story was true.

Edit: also, just because john didn't say it doesn't mean it isn't true

Dave Lombardo deserves to be in the discussion.

Dave Matthews Band's drummer is very, very good also.
