As ESPN’s Taylor Twellman reported last week, Darlington Nagbe did turn down a call-up for the U.S. national team’s recent friendlies against Cuba and New Zealand. I’m told that “family time” wasn’t the only reason Nagbe decided not to come, though.

Part of the reason was a lack of playing time, but there were other ways in which Nagbe didn’t feel valued by Klinsmann. Sources in Portland and with U.S. Soccer say that Nagbe had conversations with Klinsmann and the national team staff, and those sources now think it’s possible that Nagbe may not get called back in to the team moving forward.

If it's true, I can't really blame Nagbe.

So I'll pout and turn down an invite.....so I can get more PT. That'll show Jurgy.

I blame him for turning down an invite, that's not going to make Jurgen rate him.

Lol exactly. At least he was getting a call up. Feilhaber 2.0 on our hands, but a guy who actually had a chance, unlike Benny.

Don't invite him again if he's going to bitch and moan about playing time.

Jurgen is also a dumbass though for not rating him, every time Nagbe has featured for the US, it has been positive.

Jurgy had no qualms to cut Donovan. So he will lose no sleep over Nagbe. Nagbe is being a dumbass and a petulant child. Basically he's going to throw away his chance to make 2018 squad because he's not the hot item in 2016. Someone needs to smack him upside the head.

The really only definitive way to not fix that by the player is to simply not play.....no way to spin this as a good/positive move by Nagbe.

Yeah, regardless of whether or not he's getting the PT he feels he deserves, it's career suicide for him to turn down a call up. He still has 2 years to play his way into more time on the field for Russia '18. He could be the best player in MLS for the rest of his career and it would still be nothing in the grand scheme of things if he were to play in a World Cup and make an impact. He needs to figure it out.

Nagbe is a different dude. Very VERY family oriented. Doesn't like to leave home.

He's a stud and would help the USMNT but he does lack that killer mentality. He kind of is okay with where he is which isn't a great quality in an athlete.

I love him and his game and respect his priorities but they come with consequences.

Which makes it weird that he is disgruntled about his standing with the USMNT... you would think he'd just be happy to be consistently getting call ups.

Up until this most recent friendly camp, I'm pretty sure JK called Nagbe up for every camp since he got his citizenship.

What, Klinsmann undervaluing and not using a creative attacking player for the US after promising to make us an attacking, possession oriented team?

Well I never.

I really like darlington, he seems like a good dude, especially after everything his mom and family have been though, but i always worried he didnt have the chest for the international game.

There were just some comments by porter and other things over the years that were alittle troubling. He comes across as very sensitive person, which wont do him any favors in a cut-throat environment.

Interesting. I wonder if there is not more to this story, such as a specific incident. Perhaps Nagbe simply asked for this time off for legitimate personal reasons and Klinsmann reacted in a negative, spiteful manner. Everyone knows how Klinsmann reacted to Donovan's time off. Whatever the case, it appears that now we have bad blood.

Donovan also showed up pretty damn close to the World Cup and expected to be on the team regardless. That's not even comparable to missing several friendlies and it's honestly laughable that you even compared the two.

Hard to think that Kljestan would have gotten playing time had Nagbe shown up like he was supposed to.

Huh?

Kljestan's rebirth came during the September WCQ's, Nagbe was in that camp, but didn't play.

What?

Donovan came back to soccer more than a year before the World Cup and proceeded to put the team on his back in the 2013 Gold Cup. He had every right to expect to be on the team.
