This has probably been talked about before, but I kind of just wanted to see feedback. What are the general thoughts on the MLS? The direction the league is headed? Are there any favorites of people around here?

Does the soccer board think that within 10-15 years the league will start producing extremely gifted homegrown players on a regular basis?

Yes, it will be sooner than that, too.

Love the MLS.

Do you follow a team? I only ask these questions because I work for the Union. We play the Red Bulls this weekend and it's insane the hype and how big it "feels"...but I'm wondering how outside perspective really is

the redbulls are my favorite team, but I'm not emotionally attached in a meaningful way.

I have a lot of family in the NY/NJ area that are huge RB fans. Like number 1 rooting interest in any/all pro sports.

I imagine MLS talk on this board will pick up a bit next season as several people are jumping on the Atlanta train. I don't think I'm the only season ticket holder that posts here, and there are others from the area.

The academies in many places still need work, but the players are improving in quality and will continue to do so. Atlanta's academy is already producing fantastic results and could be some great ones to come out of there in the next handful of years.

Corrupt and hurting soccer in this country as much as it's helping.

Yea man, I've heard some crazy stories between our supporters and their supporters. They pretty much hate each other. The typical NYC vs Philly thing. I've only been to a couple of Union matches, against Montreal and Orlando, so I'm jacked for Sunday.

And I agree, Brave. We have a really good academy and we just spent several million upgrading our practice facilities and they're fine now. Earnie Stewart came in and he's so incredible. Dude is brilliant and wants to run our team like a European club, and already in year 1 its producing results. The Union have been a bottom dweller and are now in the playoffs.

Louisiana native here, LOVE MLS.
I buy the package every year and watch games live and all the condensed matches too if I can't watch them live.

To me, it's cool being able to watch the league grow the last few years and see it now before it's inevitablely a world class league.

Couldn't agree more. Hearing Earnie talk, he really thinks by 2030 this will be a top 5 league in the world.

I'm a fan. It's far from a perfect league, but it's getting better. I've been supporting SKC, but will be fully on the AUFC train next season.

This is my primary interest as well. It is exciting to watch the events unfold. I also think MLS and the investment in the clubs' academy system will pay significant dividends down the road, not just for the league but for the USMNT. There are many positive aspects regarding the growth and success of MLS.

I used to not care about MLS, but in high school when I started watching soccer more seriously, I really got into MLS and I watch as much as possible. The parity in MLS sets it apart from every other league. You can buy limited numbers of elite players, but that alone doesn't win titles in MLS. Just look at Portland last season, Nagbe is the closest thing they have to a star, and he isn't known outside the US. The MLS academy structure is in its infancy, but already clubs like FC Dallas are doing really well at producing homegrown players.

The refereeing standard is atrocious, but I still love the league. I'll watch plenty of Bundesliga and La Liga games, but those leagues aren't as interesting to me when the same big-money teams win every year. Especially Bayern Munich. Every other German team must hate them. The have a monopoly on that league, and that makes me not care as much.

In MLS, you can make MLS Cup one year, and miss the playoffs the next, like Columbus.

Listened to him on the MiB pod and I immediately wanted him to be the US technical director

What a job Jesse Marsch has done with that club, right? Their defense was atrocious early in the season and I suspected might be the undoing of their year. However, that part of their game, while still a weakness, was addressed and brought to bear for the better. It has also been a joy to watch Bradley Wright-Phillips and Sacha Kljestan as well.

Earnie Stewart, US Technical Director

Oscar Pareja, USMNT Manager

This sounds good to me.

I think the MLS is on the right track. They need to keep pumping money into their youth programs.

I went to a number of Union matches when I lived in Philly, and I even joined the Sons of Ben for a season. Didn't last. They (SoB) are the stereotypical American 'soccer fans'. It was amazing how much the expats who congregated at places like Fado or the Plough to watch matches disliked the Union because of the SoB.

I've become a big fan of the league. I might have to get MLS Live for next season. I try to watch matches with USMNT players as often as possible, and other guys I have an interest in keeping tabs on, like NOLA's own Patrick Mullins.

The standard of play has increased so much over the past five years. It's on a great trajectory. After NASL failed (the first time), MLS has done a fantastic job of supporting a slow, steady growth of the league itself and soccer in this country as a whole. People may disagree with the model, but it's stable which is exactly what a young league needs: stability.

From my point of view, the league is well on its way to becoming a great developer of talent for the region and the USMNT. This whole process is in its infancy, but the early results are promising. I feel privileged to be able to watch the league grow and evolve. I'm thankful for MLS and that it has survived where other attempts at creating a professional soccer league have failed.

I'm a fan of the league and a supporter of the Houston Dynamo. I think the growth/outlook is a bit optimistic or exaggerated (especially with attendance numbers as the league is pretty horrid with actual attendance outside of a few teams). Has a bunch of problems that I don't feel are being worked on as aggressively as they should. Too much laziness justified as being careful to not replicate NASL failing.

My biggest wish is that these teams were more willing to play long players as there's literally no penalty for losing.

It's a fun league to watch. Obviously the quality is lacking behind most of the other leagues in the world, but every time I watch a game I can't recall being bored. The games are usually very entertaining.

I don't make it a point to watch MLS games on tv, but if they're on and I'm not doing anything then I'll watch. I also probably make it to 2-3 FC Dallas games a season and have always had a good time watching games live.
