United Soccer League side FC Cincinnati started Wednesday's fourth-round U.S. Open Cup action off with a bang, hanging on for a big 1-0 win against Columbus Crew SC at Nippert Stadium. Djiby Baye Fall scored on a bizarre play in front of the Columbus goal in which he had two chances to head the ball in and made the most of the second effort for the game's only goal. The Crew fielded a strong side and were a constant menace to Cincinnati goalkeeper Mitch Hildebrandt, who made a string of fine saves in the second half to preserve the win for his team. And NASL club Miami FC were next to get in on upsetting an in-state top-flight rival, knocking off Orlando City SC 3-1. Stefano Pinho's hat trick staked the visiting side to a 3-0 lead, before Giles Barnes pulled one back for Orlando in the 79th minute. Sacramento Republic FC also taught their MLS rivals a lesson, downing Real Salt Lake 4-1 at Papa Murphy's Park.

shite like this is why I can't take the MLS seriously.

Because they don't take the US Open seriously?

Should you not take the Premier League seriously cause fifth division Lincoln City made it to the FA Cup quarterfinals?

Chicago Fire beat St Louis FC 1- 0 last night at home. If it wasnt for the odd/dope/lucky goal, who knows.

RSL played their Rookies+C Team from the USL itself (RSL monarchs). Only 2 actual First Teamers and the third string goalie.

In the midst of an awful season I thought they would go for broke, but yeah they pretty said "We don't want to win."

Not one of those teams started a B lineup.

For the Union, we fielded 3 out of 11 regular starters and we won 3-1. Even our backup fringe 1st team players were disinterested. Our #10 took 4+ shoots from 35+ yards away. I assure you in a regular game a) he would not be playing and b) if he did that, he would quickly get pulled.

At this point in the tournament, MLS teams generally use the Open Cup to try out some new players and give reserves some playing time. By the round of 16, they start taking it more seriously and play more first team starters.

It's fun to see amateur teams like Christos make a run. You also see second division teams like Cincinnati try to impress Don Garber by making a deep run and showing good Fan support. It's a fun tournament.

They need to get rid of the regional brackets.

not sure why MLS doesn't take it more seriously considering a CL spot is on the line

other than the obvious that they don't like planting the pro/rel seed by having teams from different divisions playing each other.

US Open Cup is a joke, that MLS teams really don't care about and will keep playing reserve squads until the later rounds when they match up with another MLS side.

Now let's talk about the pro/rel. Can we talk about the pro/rel please, Mac? I've been dying to talk about the pro/rel with you all day.

There... is... no... pro/rel in MLS.

Didn't Wigan win the FA Cup a few years ago, just days before being relegated from the EPL?

Those Cinderella stories are part of soccer's charm, IMO.

They did, and who they beat in the final made it even a better story.

But it fricked over Everton for a couple years
