Got home tonight and noticed some of the neighbors workers had caused some problems on my property. I have the contractors number so I give him a ring with no answer. At this point I just want it to get fixed so I go over to the neighbors house to let them know the situation and see that it gets fixed. When I come back home the wife said that it was a jerk thing to do going over there so late and disturbing them. This was 830. So I ask, how late is to late to knock on a neighbors door?

Do you think they have weapons? If so, it is too late.

Always good to have the wife on your side when it comes to the neighbors.

no need to do anything like that anywhere near dark, IMO. I would say that if it is after about 8 PM, I would leave it for another day.

Unless it's an emergency, it's best to wait. You'll probably get a better response if you confront them during the day.

Don't listen to women if you want to get shite done. Something needs to be corrected and it's not 10 pm, so you're ok. Is there really a good time to tell someone you have a problem they caused? Most people aren't in bed at 8:30 pm unless they are 70.

What was the problems? Is it something that gets worse if not addressed immediately? If not wait until tomorrow.

Which brings me to the next admission. I knew they were older but come to find out the male of the house is 74. No idea his wife's age

As long as you're polite, 8:30 pm is not really late. It finally got dark where I live just past 8. Otherwise, you may go to bed anxious and upset about some issue you didn't cause, but want corrected. And you're not guaranteed to catch them in the morning. You politely tell them while they're home and things are better for you - which is what you desire.

If needing to be addressed before tomorrow night, 830 is fine... but if it's a "when you get to it" then I'd wait til tomorrow

I probably wouldn't want to bother them after it gets dark, as a rule of thumb. It's a difficult thing to judge. Curb Your Enthusiasm had a funny episode about the social protocols of what is the accepted cutoff for when it becomes too late to call someone. I think probably a little bigger deal before cell phones pretty much completely replaced home phones.

Anyway, there is no really right answer. "Too late" means something different to everyone. For example my sister has 2 very young children. If one of her neighbors came knocking at her door at 8:30, there's a chance that they would be waking up the kids. Just use your judgement I guess, or air on the conservative side of risking to disturb people.
