Tornado chance going to moderate level in N Alabama, S Tennessee, NW Georgia. Should be an interesting afternoon and evening.

And in the place where those regions meet is my town of Chattanooga...

Schools have let out in BHam. I will always be concerned about these kinds of weather days after 2011.

That is one of the things I definitely don't miss about living in Huntsvegas

wasn’t joking either. Those places are the worst to be in for a tornado.

I've still got tons of friends and family back there, and it's pretty much my entire facebook feed right now.

Just about all of them are long time residents though, so they know the drill.

We get a lot of benefits of living in the south. Unfortunately the risk of rain wrapped tornadoes barreling through wooded and populated areas with almost no visibility is a drawback this time of year.

Stay safe, guys.

This is nothing similar to April 27th 2011. There were over 60 recorded tornadoes on that day. We could possibly get one or two today.

I am not taking away the fact that if a tornado hits your home that it wouldn't be your April 27th so to say..

Can't blame you. And after 2013 in Moore, the public schools are understandably reluctant to keep schools open when there is this kind of risk.

This ain't gonna be April 2011, but it sounds like there could be a bit of an outbreak.

SUMMARY...An upgrade to a Moderate Risk categorical outlook (driven by a 15% significant tornado risk) is planned for the 1630Z outlook (10:30am CT). DISCUSSION...It appears increasingly probable the risk for several tornadic supercells will traverse across northern portions of AL late this afternoon and through the early evening. Thunderstorm activity will be largely void across a large part of this area (north-central AL) prior to peak heating and a moderately unstable airmass is expected to develop by mid afternoon. The arrival of a speed max in the mid-levels will correspondingly lead to a marked strengthening in low-level flow and increasing hodograph size, which will be more favorable for supercells and low-level mesocyclones. Given these factors, confidence has increased such that a 15% significant tornado risk and the potential for longer lived supercells and damaging tornadoes will focus across north-central and northern AL, far southern middle TN beginning during the late afternoon/early evening, then moving east into northeast AL and far northwest GA later this evening.

Quoted again for emphasis. The set up isn't screaming "outbreak" to me. The shear is definitely strong but the convective potential isn't especially impressive. It's certainly enough to pop off supercells though. Huntsville NWS noting potential for the associated low pressure to get a little stronger over the day and maybe kick up some stronger surface winds. That would up the odds of stronger tornadoes.

Stating the obvious now, all types of severe weather are definitely possible in the area but it isn't likley to be a widespread tornado event. Just stay safe up there.
