Anyone have experience collecting PC Engine/Turbo Grafx games?

I've always been pretty interested in this system even though I've only known a single person that has owned one in my life (oddly he was also the only person I knew with a Sega Master System).
Up until the Wii Virtual console I only played a couple of Bonk games on emulators.
On VC I currently have Gate of Thunder, Ninja Spirit, Castlevania Rondo of Blood, and Galaga '90.
Looking up the system though it seems that the damn thing is a pain to collect for. There are quite a few variations of the hardware, a bunch of system cards, turbo taps, and all kinds of stuff you need to have a full system or you can spend out the butt for a Turbo Duo and hope the capacitors on the system haven't gone out.
Just look at all this shite. linked from pcenginefx.com
Note: The SuperGrafx is also its own format, however is considered part of the “HuCard” family and thus does not have it’s own official logo. SuperGrafx HuCards are only compatible with the SuperGrafx system.
1: The TurboGrafx-CD can play Super CD-ROM2 games if equipped with the Super System Card v3.0.
2: The TurboGrafx-CD can play Arcade CD-ROM2 games if equipped with the Arcade Card PRO + HuCard converter.
3: The TurboDuo can play Arcade CD-ROM2 games if equipped with the Arcade Card DUO+HuCard converter.
1: The PC Engine CD-ROM2 can play Super CD-ROM2 games if equipped with the Super System Card v3.0.
2: The PC Engine CD-ROM2 can play Arcade CD-ROM2 games if equipped with the Arcade Card PRO.
3: The PC Engine DUO consoles can play Arcade CD-ROM2 games if equipped with the Arcade Card DUO.
4: The PC Engine LT can play CD-ROM2, Super CD-ROM2 and Arcade CD-ROM2 games if equipped with a LT Super CD-ROM2 Adapter+Super CD-ROM2 unit and appropriate System card. The LT can also be used in conjunction with the PC Engine CD-ROM2 system/interface unit without an adapter.
5: The PC Engine CoreGrafx consoles can play CD-ROM2, Super CD-ROM2 and Arcade CD-ROM2 games if equipped with a Super CD-ROM2 unit and appropriate System card.
6: The PC Engine SuperGrafx can play CD-ROM2, Super CD-ROM2 and Arcade CD-ROM2 games if equipped with a Super CD-ROM2 unit and appropriate System card. The SuperGrafx can also attach to the PC Engine CD-ROM2 unit using the RAU-30 adapter.
7: The Pioneer LaserActive+PAC-N10 can play Arcade CD-ROM2 games if equipped with a Arcade Card DUO and HuCard converter (converter needed for US model only).
Obviously if I'm just going to play games a Retro Pie running Magic Engine seems like it would be a good option.
But there something about owning and playing on the system that feels better.
W/o destroying my bank account there is the core system w/an Everdrive. Unfortunately that would only cover HuCard games.
The more expensive option would be to get a Super SD System 3 which you can attach to a couple of the Japanese models and play everything from HuCards all the way up to Arcade card CD games. But of course it's like $300 on top of the at least $100 for a system. It also has composite and RGB support built in. LINK
Beyond collecting some of the SHMUPS that seem to cost a shite ton, what all else on this system is worth getting into? Do any of you find the library large enough to go further than a RetroPie style system?

I have a TG16 console with the everdrive. No CD add on. Awesome shooters. I don't know if I'll ever spring for the CD but if I do I would definitely get the Japanese PC Engine as opposed to the US TurboDuo

Growing up, I wanted to own a Turbo Grafx 16 for 4 things:
1. Bonk
2. Bomberman
3. Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
4. Shoot-em-up's
Rondo of Blood is still a really fun Castlevania game, if you're into those, and it's much better than the SNES "port," Dracula X, but none of the other games I've tried on the system have held up for me. The Bonk games have always underwhelmed me and there are plenty of great Bomberman games on the SNES. And I like shooters, but just not enough to play old ones that I have little nostalgia for.
I think it's a neat system but I would never spend that much money to own the actual hardware for it. Also, aren't Turbo Grafx 16 gamepad cords really short? I don't want to deal with that these days.

I always wanted to, but just couldn't justify the cost. I went ahead and got a PC Everdrive from Krikkz.com. I also got my PC Engine RGB modded.

I kind of want to start collecting Turbo Grafx games

I had a friend with a TurboGrafx16. Bonk, Splatterhouse, and I think Kid Chameleon were all good. I've seen videos of Blazing Lazers and that looks good too.

Kid Chameleon
Splatterhouse was another one of those exclusive TG16 games that I remmeber wanting to play badly and then being dissappointed by once I did. 2 and 3 were released for Genesis.

It seems like I remember playing either Kid Chameleon or Alex Kidd on TurboGrafx16 but all I can find on google and youtube is Sega. Maybe that's where I played them. Bonk and Splatterhouse both eventually came out on other systems but I think they started on TurboGrafx and were two of the top games for that system.

This is all really cool stuff.

quote:No, you're definitely right on that. Bonk was essentially TG16's Mario or Sonic, during that era when every video game company felt like they needed a mascot. (And, at the time, 10-year old me thought Bonk looked amazing and I wanted to play it badly.)
Bonk and Splatterhouse both eventually came out on other systems but I think they started on TurboGrafx and were two of the top games for that system.
And yeah, Splatterhouse jumped to Gensis after the TG16 began to fade and the Genesis had established itself as the "mature" console. The original only ever came to TG16.

All of this, but I have the old white pc engine, with everdrive. I'd love to have an RGB modded Duo at some point though, as the CD system has some games for sure!
This is a thread I was not expecting on here. Really nice job OP!

What system did you get it? And where?

Seconded on wanting to know which system and what the cost was. Assuming it probably came from Japan as it seems like a lot of systems coming from there are modded in some form or fashion.

Maybe you are thinking of Keith Courage in Alpha Zones. You played a character that transformed into different forms depending on the level.

A little late, but I got a used base model PC Engine from eBay. Then, I got Wesley at retrofixes.com to RGB mod it. I think it was ~$60.
