May be off to Europe, but it's possible that an offer to coach the national team could keep him here.

I don't follow MLS so I don't know anything about this guy. Should I be outraged, encouraged, or neither?

He only played in MLS for 2 seasons and was sporting director at Philly for only 2 and a half.

He's a Dutch-American (born in Holland to an American father, went to an American* school there but lived there most of his life) and was a very solid member of our national team at a time when we had little in the way of quality. After his playing career he was sporting director for NAC Breda in Holland and then AZ Alkmaar and did great work with both teams. He moved Philly in the right direction, especially as far as their youth set up is concerned (I say this based on limited info, I could be wrong). My perception of ES is that he is a smart guy and this is a solid hire. I've wanted him to be a bigger part of US soccer since his interview with Men In Blazers two years ago.

“Part of the interview process was making sure there was a candidate based on a style of play that we discussed with each other,” Stewart said on a conference call. “Yes, there is a list of candidates. It’s a wide list. It’s not based on a geographical part of anything. It’s a wide list of candidates that will come up with that… It’s already in place that we’ve been talking about a candidates list and we will continue that search process.
“The friendlies aren’t the most important. Making the right choice is the most important thing. It’s process over speed, and I’m pretty sure it’s going to look a lot like the interview process that went on before the general manager role. that will also happen for the head coach. Once again, it will be process over speed.”

He did a great job at AZ, winning with hidden gems and developing players. They go into the league having 20x less talent than PSv,Ajax,Feyenoord, and still came out in 3rd, just 8 or nine off 2nd place.
That alone let's me give him a chance.

I think Stewart is about as good a hire as we can expect for this new position, given the circumstances. I’m fine with this. He’s built a good young core for the Union already in his short time with the team. He was also great in the Netherlands.
If he hires an American coach, I think it’s more likely to be Berhalter than Marsch. Marsch seems to be on his way to Leipzig, and I don’t think Berhalter would stick around if the Crew actually move to Austin. We’ll probably know the Crew’s fate in just a few weeks, but at this point, I’d be surprised if the team moves to Austin for next year.
I don’t know if there’s a position that just oversees youth development, but my dream is that Oscar Pareja gets that one day for the boys side. That guy knows how to develop talent from a young age into Bundesliga caliber players.
