HOw to improve the 'beautiful game'

love the world cup, but so many americans aren't watching. So what could be done to make the game more exciting? 3 things:
1. Get rid of the offsides rule. Seems pointless and really slows down the game and kills a lot of scoring opportunities.
2. expand the size of the goal by 6 feet (2 meters) in width and 1 foot (1/3 meter) in height. For obvious reasons.
3. Make a regular goal worth 2 points, a penalty kick worth 1 point, and a goal from over 50 feet (15 meters) away worth 3 points (3 point line)
with these changes soccer (european football) could truly take off as the great sport/ the beautiful game if you will) and get the recognition it deserves

Wasn’t aware Mike Greenberg posted on TD

I do sorta wish the size of the goal scaled with the size of the keeper. Bring on the era of the midget goalkeeper!

I don’t like any of those ideas.

How about none of that.
I be all for retroactively suspending or fining the diving players though.

this would be the worst. i watched a friendly where this was the case and u end up with teams putting 5 guys in their own box and 5 guys in the other teams box and just hoofing it as far as they can.

obvious reasons such as making it easier to score a bunch of bullshite goals without actually creating good chances? i guess i'd be ok with expanding it slightly but not nearly 2 meters

no fricking way

Absolutely. Also, there’s one thing I absolutely do think is better in other sports, and that’s the way we keep track of time. I would love seeing that as long as commercial breaks are kept out.

the problem with the idiots that say this is that they think, oh shite he was barely offsides and he wouldve scored if that wasnt a rule, without realizing that if offsides wasnt a rule teams wouldnt try to play an offsides trap or a high defensive line. they would just keep backing up to their own goal line if they knew any pass that got behind them was gonna be legal

dont you ever say that.
as soon as there is a rule to stop time during the game we will get commercials and an increase in stoppages to add more commercials. theres no way you can add in stopping the clock without this being the case

That’s why I added the last sentence.
But in every other way, it makes more sense to keep time like all other sports.

Soccer is just fine as is, as evidenced by its popularity worldwide. It doesn’t need to be changed to incorporate a bunch of gimmicks so the lowest common denominator in the US can be appeased

I enjoy soccer, especially the World Cup and the Euros, but I am not a regular on this board and not near as big of a fan as most posters. That being said, there is a segment of Americans who will never like soccer, so I don't think changing the sport to try and appeal to people who don't like it is a wise move. NASCAR changed a ton in the 1990's to try and broaden its appeal outside of the South and all they did was alienate their traditional fan base to such a degree that their ratings and attendance have plummeted.

Nothing. Soccer doesn't need to changes its rules and pander to a bunch of white trash rednecks unlike CTE-ball.

No. The offsides rule actually increases scoring because without it, forwards would hang around the goalmouth, which would cause defenders to hang around the goalmouth. It actually encourages an open game.

Not bad it took until the quarter finals to finally get a thread like this

Yeah I'm actually impressed. Maybe our collective efforts have paid off.

It's 2018, they have clocks that tell you precisely how much time is left. That is the most infuriating part of soccer. They refuse to tell time correctly and only one person in the stadium actually knows how much time is left. That defies logic.
