Anybody been lately, I’ve heard they are doing a pretty massive renovation, and looking to know if they are done with all that.

If so, has it changed for the better, because room are going for 400+ a night.

My wife and I were there in April. They were working on the main building, where we’ve stayed in the past. They put us in the south building which was renovated. It was pretty nice. It’s definitely an upgrade considering how outdated the rooms were. As far as I know, the main building was the last to get done.

Was there over the 4th of July. the newly renovated rooms are nice. We got a promo deal for under $200/night.

The reno is also the great dining hall, so food options are limited on the resort--you can still get meals but you;re better off planning some meals off the resort.

Heard locals are pretty pissed with the renovations to the main building particularly the lobby, gift shop and main area with fire place. They say it's pretty Marriott generic and gone is the old look. Anyone notice?

It is true. They took a lot of the original wood out and made it more modern.

The new rooms are stupid as hell too. I absolutely love the place and will continue to go there because it is such an awesome place, but the newly renovated rooms are awful.

We always stay in a suite, which has a living room and a bedroom. The old couches in the living room area were normal, comfortable couches. Now they have these dumb arse modern couches that are probably about 7 feet long, but only a three foot portion of the couch has a back to it. It makes absolutely no sense.

Also, there aren't curtains on the glass doors separating the two rooms. The 175" TV in the living room might as well be the sun shining into the bedroom from five feet away.

I have another trip planned in September and we just decided to do a regular room because the suite was so worthless after the renovation.

Seriously though, I really love the place. It is a perfect trip from New Orleans with the kids.

I loved the way the old wood smelled in the main building.

I can't wait to get back and sit out by the new fire pits and use the drink waiter service out by the "beach
'.

It really is the best family place on the gulf coast.

Hate to hear that about the renovations being shitty. This was on my list of weekend getaways for the wife and I. I hate the way some of these modern hotels look. Everything looks cheap and the furniture is always shitty. Guess I’ll have to wait for some more reviews.

It is absolutely, 100% still worth going to. The beach and pool are great, the spa is great, all of the activities are great. The golf course is absolutely fantastic.

If you were planning on going, go. Even if the renovations are shitty, they will still be new and nice, they just wont' have the Southern charm aesthetic that the place used to have on the inside (the outside remains the same).

I've worked for the hotel, worked in the hotel as a sub contractor, stayed there, caught many a fish on the Pier, played the courses countless times, enjoyed the pool too many times to count, the gym and spa are fantastic, caught 100s of bass on the course ponds, eaten at the restaurant, had high school functions there, ect. That place has a special place in my heart and it's absolutely worth going for the overall experience

You're lucky they didn't tear the whole place down, the way people think these days.

My newly renovated room was very nice, IMO. I didn't notice the wood in the main room, but I was lugging around kids and fighting a stomach bug...

I’ll echo what everyone has said. My grandparents brought my dad here and my parents brought me. I have great family memories on this property between the pool, bayhouse building, and bucky’s lounge.

Tagged along with my husband on a work trip last fall and we stayed in a renovated room. It was dark, cold, and sterile compared to the previous style. The main building hadn’t started yet so I can’t speak for it but an AL.com covered it and I didn’t like what I saw. I heard from my aunt in Mobile that all the locals are calling “Best Western on the Bay” .....probably a little dramatic but it speaks to the general opinion of the remodel.

Will I go again? Yes, but mostly to go down the street to Washhouse and get the chateaubriand.

If they majorly altered the main old building, I suppose it's sort of sad (it certainly had an old school sort of charm to it). But, I'm pretty sure, it dates from like the early 1930s or so, and isn't really connected itself to the Civil War - and, yes, I know the actual property is.

I enjoyed the old feel. Hell i even got used to the musty smell of the main house and the north bay house. Hopefully it will be more similar than different
