Mass shooting events (MSEs) have become highly politicized, complicating study and policy development. We sought to identify social determinants of health that put communities at risk for MSEs. A data set was created using the Federal Bureau of Investigation Uniform Crime Report, American Community Survey, state gun laws, the Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System, and 10 other sources. Mass shooting events were defined as those events where 4 or more persons were killed. Mass shooting events were paired with 180 measures of social determinants of health for the county in which the shooting occurred. Pearson’s and Spearman’s correlation coefficients, t-tests, and chi-square tests were used to analyze the data set. A total of 93,380 instances of gun violence nationwide were identified from 2005 to 2018; 155 of these were identified as mass shootings. Communities in states with the strictest gun laws had a 1.513 greater risk (p = 0.031) of mass shootings.

That makes no sense. Gun control means less guns in the hands of bad guys.

Communities seeking to safeguard citizens should focus on access to mental health professionals, promoting socialization and public space use, and addressing socioeconomic inequality.

ETA - that's the conclusion from the same study you linked. Thanks.

No, gun control means hitting your target.

Seems like a pretty meaningless observation

Maybe the stricter laws are in response to the shootings

Surely you aren't suggesting that more mass shooting events happen BECAUSE of the stricter gun laws?

Which means it’s really about an 83% greater chance of experiencing a mass shooting.

Try pulling off a mass shooting in Kennesaw, Georgia. You’d get 30 rounds from 5-6 different guns laid into you before you got one round off.

Otherwise known as “less people who can shoot back”?

Probably has nothing to do with it. /Eye roll /

What they're describing is a city.

One thing we do know is that gun free zones don't stop shooters.

Might be some of that.

That particular definition they used also is going to naturally trend toward cities too. Do you remember 155 mass shootings in the last 13 years? Me neither.

This reminds me of all those Poly Sci papers I read in college.

They’d take an obvious point, and hide it behind graphs, and truly inscrutable English.

-

When people talk about mass shootings, they always talk about school shooters. But School shootings are rare.

The overwhelming majority of shooting events are gang and drug related. And they happen in poor minority neighborhoods.

This survey repeats the obvious, and shows that.

Are you trying to tell me that criminals don't care about laws? That's crazy talk. You're crazy.

The one thing we do know is that access to guns means more people die in shootings.

So are people usually packing heat in a Church where you live?

To me this is simply a chicken/egg type of scenario

A very clear example would be that Southern California has air quality issues in places like Los Angeles. They also have very strict emissions standards. Now do you think that they have strict emissions standards because of the smog or do you think they have smog because of the strict emissions standards? It seems pretty obvious to anyone with a functioning brain that they have strict emissions standards because of the smog.

Likewise in many places with stricter gun control laws you have high crime. Because the legislation was in response to an existing problem. The idea that the high crime is precisely BECAUSE of the stricter gun control laws is a stupid fallacy.
