Five teams have to perform this weekend. Notre Dame has to just sit back and watch. And for all those ND assholes that for some reason feel the need to post an LSU message board well facts are facts. Go google your strength of schedule

If Notre Dame had a loss, they'd be watching everyone else play their way in ahead of them. They have to be perfect damn near every year to get in.

Considering Clemson and Bama would still be in if they lost, I'd say it's a wash

Why, because Notre Dame is America’s team with a national fan base?

Congrats on being on the radio when most healthy young men were fighting in WW2

Exactly. People can say what they want about their schedule, but they went undefeated. They have every damn right to be in the playoff. Can't ask for much more than that.

Notre Dame claims the 1943 National Championship. Alabama didn't even field a team due to the war

Conference membership and conference championship games are voluntary and not required. Assuming all favorites win this weekend and you give ND an arbitrary 0-12 notch onto their SOS, the old BCS system has ND’s SOS ranked #10.

When you posted this, you were uninformed.

They lucked out that teams like Stanford Florida St were middling this year. They scheduled a difficult schedule on paper, but it didnt materialize.

They deserve to be in the playoff. They may get crushed, but you can't exclude them.

Yet somehow A&M was also able to field teams throughout the duration of WW2, specifically in 1943 when a bunch of the SEC teams has to cancel football due to a lack of players.

You guys even improved in your 4-5-1 record with a 7-2-1 record, tied for the 30th best win percentage in your school’s 116th year history. Meanwhile OSU, coming off a national championship 9-1 season, lost so many players that season, and had send the great Paul Brown off with a 3-6 record, the 2nd worst season in history before following up with a runner-up and 9-0 record.

So the War seemed to give A&M a bit of boost in their overall history. Some sacrifice.

Ok so what about the weeks where Bama Clemson etc played the Citadel while ND actually had to perform?

Joking aside, this has led me to some info that quite interesting and the ability to field a team in that 1943 season may actually have saved the University itself.

How Navy saved Notre Dame after World War II – the team’s shared histories
quote:

Without Navy, Notre Dame may not still exist. In spite of its on field success, Notre Dame fell on hard times in World War II. The school’s population dwindled to a depression era number of 2,623 students in 1943 and a 20 percent reduction in five years led to stark financial problems for the school.
quote:

Then the Navy came to Notre Dame’s rescue.
quote:

According to Notre Dame president Hugh O’Donnell, the school “offered all of the facilities of this institution to the government. In April of 1943 the V-7 Indoctrination School was created and the first group of 900 men, all college graduates enlisted for one month as apprentice seamen.”
quote:

The late Notre Dame Vice President, Emeritus Joyce, also shared the same sentiments of Navy’s importance to the school. "All I can say is without the Navy during the war, this institution would have gotten down to a few hundred students.
quote:

"Instead of that, we were almost twice our normal size during the war, and we were able to contribute something to the Navy."
It’s just crazy to compare today to those times, and think that the manpower needed to support a war War being able to cancel relatively meaningless college sport (at least from a wins and losses perspective) but potentially cause great institutions to shut down entirely (at least temporarily).

Well this time last year there was a team with 1 loss that did not have to perform on Championship weekend yet still got into the playoff. That team...Alabama!!

It's why they should be required to participate fully in the ACC if they are going to use them as their quasi conference.

Not that it matters, they will get drilled by any of the other 3, but it does leave out a deserving team this way which sucks.
