American Brittany Male v/s Female Update Bottom of Pg.

We are getting a American Brittany puppy in about 8 weeks. The puppies were born last night. We originally wanted a female but none of the puppies born are female in the color scheme we wanted.
We do not plan to hunt the dog, it’s just going to be a family pet and a running friend once it’s of age. I have two children ages 5 and almost 2.
What is your opinion on having a male v/s female when it comes to training, being around children, any other considerations?
Any advice on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

I found males are hard headed. They mark.
Females are sweet. Easily trained IMO.

Who's the breeder? I'm interested in a Brittany Spaniel as well.

Some things to consider. Do you plan on breeding the dog? If female, they come into heat and if an inside dog, that is an issue I'd rather not deal with.
If a male, they will have their own issues as well if not neutered.
I had one years ago that was an outside dog and it loved to dig, especially in the summer months. It would dig holes all over the yard to lay in, so I built a large kennel with a concrete pad and a house that I filled with straw for it to sleep on.

Can't give insight on males, but we had a female who was the sweetest, smartest and protective dog I've ever had. And not aggressive protective, but always hovering over the little ones and checking on everyone in their rooms. I'd get another brittany in a heartbeat if she was the standard for the breed, but we're taking a little time since we lost her unexpectedly a few weeks ago.

Cant speak to males but we have a 10 yr old female. Dont know what more you could ask for in a dog. Smart as hell but a gentle and calm demeanor. Great with kids. Make sure to give it an outlet for the working nature. Mine will fetch a tennis ball until she collapses. Awesome dogs. Good luck

Just curious, what made you choose this breeder? There's no mention of health testing, or other standards being met.
Sounds to me like some kid decided to breed his first dog because she was "a great dog." Pretty much the definition of a back yard breeder.
Might be great dogs, but I would not recommend paying $750-850 for a pup unless the parents have all applicable health certs and do "something" (obedience, field trials, agility, anything to show aptitude outside of their back yard.)

I understand your concerns. I had them as well and was able to get paperwork on the dogs. From there I was able to find medical test. Some gaps on the moms side, which worried me. Talked to my vet and discussed what I found. She felt comfortable with the information and gave it her blessing. So from that point I decided to move forward.

We have a male. He will be 5 in July and is great as a family pet. Great around kids, generally well mannered. Took some work as a pup but he is literally one of the family.

I did the “they didn’t have any females so I just got the male puppy” and I regret it. All females I’ve had have been much more trainable, this male is taking longer to mature and giving me gray hair.

The search is over and we found something a little more local. We went see the dogs this weekend and picked out this one. We get to pick her up on June 15. Thanks for the comments along the way folks.

Agreed. The one good thing that will help time fly by is Saturday I am heading to Punta Cana for a week. The last week is going to drag though.
