My league is considering dropping defense

and adding another flex spot in its place. Has anyone done this? Opinions on how it’s worked out?

TDFL drop both Kicker and D/ST, and added an additional flex spot
QB
RB
RB
WR
WR
TE
Flex

Not much left on the WW with nothing but position players all scooped up by everyone in the draft.
There are a few early season gets on breakout players, but slim after those have been snagged.

We replace team def with 2 IDP players one year.
I liked it a lot more but the rest of the league voted to go back to team def

Yup. 2 flex. No k or d. Like it a lot better.

We dropped kicker. First year we added another flex, but went back to normal the next with still no kicker

Dynasty league I’m in has no TE, D, or K. 3 flex spots and only 5 bench. Fun setup.

We dropped kickers 2-3 years ago and added a flex. just dropped defenses this year.
It’s nice not having to give any thought to kicker or defenses.

I actually enjoy having a kicker and defense, since I stream them every week. The rest of your lineup is generally pretty set, so it’s nice having to make a couple more meaningful transactions.
There’s definitely logic in streaming both positions. It’s definitely not just random, but it’s obviously prone to more variance.

i have not been in a league without defense but we went to IDP from team defenses. Fun. Created more interest and draft strategies.

Kicker and defense can add value if you put in effort on them. Defense especially takes a lot of thought and planning if you want to add value through that spot

Is it really a dynasty league if you only have 5 bench? You don't have any room to hold talented rookies to wait for them to develop.

1-12 ranked kickers typically have about a point or less differences in average score per game. The only trick to defense is reading the trend of what defense is hot at the beginning of the season that's on free agency (and there's always at least one) and moving quick on them. Then when it gets a couple of weeks before playoffs look at matchups for the final stretch.
I prefer my leagues that don't use defense or kickers.

D may have some strategy but there really isn’t one for kickers no matter how much people try to say. It’s completely random

It’s not completely random. Home favorites score more points.
Going for higher Vegas game totals. Stream your kickers, unless you work your way into a super high-powered offense. It works for me, and I have tracked my kicker and defense. It’s definitely not random.

I don’t have any statistical data to back up my opinion or anything, but this has to be wrong.. at least partially

You can increase your odds of a kicker performing well by choosing certain favorable conditions....it’s still largely random

That’s fine. I think we disagree on this. There’s variance to this, but there’s also variance when streaming tight ends. I don’t think it’s so unpredictable.

I think the difference between the top K overall vs the 20th is around a 1.5 points per game.
So you basically have guys in your league who draft a guy on a decent offense, set him and forget him or guys that try to play the weekly guessing game of streaming the K. Either way fantasy match ups are very rarely decided by the kicking match up. I just don't think they add enough value to the game to waste time on.
at least with streaming tight ends there are match up factors, expected weekly passing volume, etc things you can look at to make an educated guess on. A kicker's production is largely out his hands.
