What is Russia's threat? Why is the deep state so scared of Russia?

I asked this in another thread but I though it deserved a thread of its own.
In this entire MUH Russia fiasco no one has yet to explain why Russia is such a massive geopolitical foe.
What is Russia's threat?
During the Obama, Bush, and Clinton administrations the federal government and MSM could give two shits about Russia. But now they are all the rage and the big as boogieman that is going to impose mind control over all Americans. WTF is going on?

Deep state had a lot of contact with the then USSR many of the goals of deep state line up with the old Soviet mentality. Maybe they are afraid of that coming to life.
