The state is providing funding for all K-12 schools in Louisiana to begin using the RAVE Mobile Safety App that will better alert authorities to emergencies on K-12 campuses.

“Today we are taking a step forward in making our schools safer with technology that will dramatically improve reporting and response times for teachers and other educators who face emergency situations while in their classrooms,” Gov. John Bel Edwards said. “While we hope and pray that the safety of our children and their teachers is never compromised, it’s our hope that this technology will assist in protecting our schools.”

Hooray. More hysteria over something that although does exist and happen but has been blown completely out of proportion and creates a climate of fear for parents, teachers, and students. When you hear kids saying they are scared to go to school each day because of shootings it’s sad and misguided. Adults and the media have created this mindset that they need to be scared and constantly on guard which is absurd.

Same with people advocating for spending millions to turn schools into forts. Schools should be an open place of learning, not some sort of heavily armored prisons with drills and intrusive security measures for something that much much much more likely than not will never happen.

It’s just an app and a button, ok who cares. But damn the mass hysteria about school shootings is a terrible thing. Very much like us giving away our privacy and rights to the dear old fed gov after 9/11. Are we safer? No. But hey we feel like we are because by turning us into a police state.

I mean we are less than a month in school and we've had a gun in a book sack. So what is wrong with the technology outside of it could be misused like anything else?

Contributes to the idea that you need to constantly feel scared and on guard at school.

Nothing is wrong with the technology. What’s wrong is the idea that the technology is needed in the first place. Schools should feel like a safe space for learning. People misguidedly think feeling safe means we need to constantly be in fear and have all sorts of security measures turning our schools into these secure prisons / forts.

Would you have felt differently if it were implemented differently? Like a quiet announcement to parents with no announcement through the media?

You’re a stupid frick if you think this is only for active shooters. Have you seen the public schools in NOLA and BR? You very well might need to alert authorities when ‘culcha’ happens in the classroom.

Yes, but it still reinforces a climate of fear with the teachers. My issue isn’t with this particular app but just the whole idea that everyone needs to be on guard for school shootings and new technology and measures need to be put in place to make our schools as "safe" as possible. It’s a waste of money, won’t stop shootings (they can just park right outside and fire away as people leave can they not?) and creates an environment that’s not conducive to learning.

The mentality of fear needs to go away.

That is the first thing I thought of when I first saw it because there was also a report that the BRPD received funds to set up a call center in which an app is going to be available for so people can report suspicious activity, etc.. And it didn't seem any different than calling 911.

We know that nothing is safe anymore, school, going to the movies, going to the mall, etc... So why not have an app that can alert the officials quicker?

The old saying, "Prepare for the worst; hope for the best." comes to mind. IF my child, God forbid, were to be at a school when something like that happened, I would want every measure available. This is a case of "What does it hurt?", and the answer to that is "Not a damn thing".

Anymore? I think the present day is the safest time in history and I highly suspect schools are safer and less violent than when I was going through them in the late 80s / early 90s. The news and internet and how info spreads everywhere is all that’s changed. It looks bad but it’s always been bad.

I used to work with his girl who didn’t let her kids go play outside without an adult because you jut can’t do that "these days" and I’m thinking this hysteria has consumed you and your kids suffer as a result. The delusion that we always need to be safer and have crap that will protect us. The button is a useless fix for something that for 99.99% of people will never see a school shooting. What it does do is reinforce the idea that "these days" it’s super dangerous so you need to be constantly on guard and not enjoy life.

Just another worthless contract that JBE got a 500,000 campaign contribution to award a 5 mill contract.

It just rolls on.....

I don’t think it does that at all.

It doesn’t "hurt" me. As I’ve said in my other posts though is that it’s jsut one more thing that reinforces the idea that there is always something to fear and you need to be on guard. That’s not a healthy psyche to be instilling in our kids heads. That’s the damage it’s doing.
