I don't care if it's sacrilegious... we need our QB healthy
I'll try to keep the OP updated with the latest Drew Brees injury related updates
***UPDATES START HERE***
apparently Saints officials fearing the worst

Saints' QB Drew Brees is expected to undergo thumb surgery as early as today that would be expected to sideline him approximately 6 weeks, per leagues sources.

Saints staff fears torn ligament in Brees thumb..if surgery needed, could sideline until November...They should know more later tonight/tomorrow...They’re holding out hope it could be less severe but they’re not optimistic.

Drew Brees said he will see a hand specialist. He’s concerned and said he hopes it’s not too serious, but doesn’t want to say it’s not serious. Will meet with the specialist later today.

"It was a thumb," Payton said re: Brees.
Said he couldn't throw the ball.

If you know Drew Brees you know it has to be a significant injury. In 2011, he played with a severely sprained knee that would have sidelined most players for weeks.

A ton of guys need to dial it back today. Drew Brees doesn't have a broken neck he jammed his thumb. It's week 2.
This game was an abortion lets get #9 and the others back and move on ASAP.

the shot they had of him on the sideline trying to pick up a ball and immediately dropping it in obvious pain has me deeply concerned

NO idea if it is a torn ligament or just jammed up. For all we know, Brees could be back next week. Worse case with ligament repair might be 4 weeks +/-
Long season and starting 1 - 3 then going on a long winning streak is the Saints pattern anyway.

Looked pretty serious when the ball dropped out of his hand on the sideline. We can only hope it's a bad sprain that takes 2-3 weeks to heal.

Jesus Christ, guess what was in Drew’s hand right before it got hit

I heard Donald on a hot mic day "imma get Drew's thumb!"
Think he said it to Anthony Hargrove

Man y’all are crazy. A hyperextended thump, sprain or anything torn in the hand takes a minimum 3-4 weeks. By the looks of it, it seems pretty serious which could put him out for 8 weeks with ZERO usage of his throwing hand. That’s a season killer, and it’s a nagging injury that never goes away. He will never fully heal.

Here's the replay. Following his eyes, it sure does look like 99 was going for the hand. He follows through and doesn't seem to have his eye on the ball at all.

So your prognosis is 1 week different than mine and I am crazy? I said we can only hope...

Where’d you finish your fellowship in hand surgery?
