Hey Tiger fans!! I will be heading down to Baton Rouge on Oct. 5 to watch my Aggies get crushed by your mighty Tigers. Not sure what the opening line will be, but I'm guessing something like 27 points. While the Ags have played some Big Five opponents fairly close over the years, I'm not sure we've faced anyone as strong as LSU in quite some time, and we've been pretty abysmal against Top 10 opponents, going 0-8 in those games since 2000 with an average losing margin of 32 points. Here are the scores of games against Top 10 opponents (plus LSU) since 2000:

2017
Wisconsin (9): 10-59

2010
Oklahoma (7): 24-31

2009
Boise State (6): 21-52

2008
BYU-Provo (8): 14-34
Boise State (9): 14-49

2007
Oklahoma (3): 3-54

2005
Alabama (5): 3-35

2002
Nebraska (9): 13-44

2001
LSU (13): 14-31

The Ags lost most of their starters from the nation's No. 2 scoring offense last season (but have a returning junior in Jordan Love who many experts believe could be a top 3 QB in next year's draft), and while they have put up pretty solid numbers, they have been far less consistent this season. For example, in the win over SDSU last week the Ags managed to put only a single FG on the board in the 2nd half.

The defense was No. 26 in the country in yards per play last season (ranked a bit lower in total yards and points allowed because their offense scored so quickly last season that they spent a lot of time on the field), and is right at the same spot this season (tied with LSU - allowing 4.7 yards per play).

USU's HC Gary Andersen is back for a second stint after leaving at the end of the 2012 season to take over at Wisconsin. As most of you avid fans probably know, your current DC Dave Aranda was Andersen's DC for a season at USU and for Anddersen's two seasons at Wisconsin. Aggie fans generally think very highly of Aranda.

Here is the real reason I stopped by: I'm looking for recommendations for my time in Baton Rouge. When I assumed this would be an evening game, I had planned to drive up from NOLA in the morning, spend the day tailgating, etc., then spend the night in Baton Rouge. Now I'm just coming up early in the morning (hoping to arrive by 8:30) and staying for the day. But I'd love to make the most of my time in Baton Rouge. I was there for a baseball game a few years ago, and the group I was with ended up at Walk-Ons (which had too much of a fern bar/corporate/chain feel for my tastes). I'd love to try something better this time. So, any recommendations for pre- and post-game food, bars, tailgating for visiting fans, etc.? I'd also love any thoughts or tips about game-day traditions (probably different for this rare morning game) and anything else you want to share. Also, how friendly are LSU fans to visiting fans wearing visiting colors?

Many thanks! Here's to a well-officiated and injury-free game!

Sorry to disappoint: ChicAggie signifies that I live in Chicago, not that I am a Chick. When I first got on a fan board back in about 2001, "ChicagoAggie" was already taken, and I liked the sound of "ChicAggie." It reminds me a bit of 'da Bears Superfans on SNL.

So far I'm highly impressed with the quality of the responses. Is this a representative sample of the friendliness/class of Tigers fans generally or just typical fan-board banter?

It really pisses LSU fans off that this game is at 11, but you guys coming all the way from Utah are really getting screwed. That's a long trip, for what should be an amazing experience, only to get 75% of the greatness of that experience ripped away with the early start.

Go to Chimes after the game. You won't be disappointed.

Seems high.

I’d take Utah St. +27 in a heartbeat. Jordan Love is a great quarterback.

Definitely disappointed to be robbed of the true "LSU game day" experience with the godawful kickoff time.

I second the Chimes recommendation. It’s probably my favorite place in BR.

Not at all. This board is not even close to the real representation of the LSU fan base. This board is filled with some of the dumbest people you could ever meet. Think of the perception of Louisiana people that the outside world has. The vast majority of people aren't really like that in LA, but on here they are.

You may be a little friendly banter at games, but just take it in stride and those people will treat you very well.

You might be right, but you were favored by 24 over Vandy (my daughter's school) on the road. I HOPE we're better than Vandy, but hard to say at this point.

Sounds like I'll be going to Chimes after the game. Is that even possible? Will it be too full to get in?

Make the most of it. That's all you can really do. Here are my recommendations...

1- get there as early as possible. 6-7 AM would be ideal.

2- walk around and mingle with LSU fans. You might get a little shite, but if you take it like a good sport, they will welcome you.

3- visit Mike's habitat

4- watch the players and the band walk down the hill before the game.

5- get into the stadium early enough for pregame

6- go eat at Chimes after the game.

2, 5, and 6 (along with the atmosphere of the actual game itself) is where you are really going to miss out. You won't get near the full experience of those things with this BS start time.

Utah St. would beat Vandy by 10.

ETA: to answer your OP, Pastime is usually packed Friday night before the game. Decent pizza and beer, just a college town atmosphere. Chimes is a good place to go and so is Superior Bar and Grill as well (be careful with their margaritas, you’ll absolutely get plastered if you don’t pay attention).

Fans are going to give you some banter but not too much, just let it roll off your back, it’s all in good fun, and they’ll usually welcome you with open arms to a tailgate if you’re sociable. We’re nice folks down here. And it sucks that y’all won’t get to experience a real LSU atmosphere with the kickoff time.

Have fun!

Tiger fans are very friendly to opposing fans (with a few SEC exceptions) and will without a doubt invite you to join them in their tailgate. Walk up, ask what's cooking, and be friendly to the larger tailgates where there is a cooking operation. You will be introduced to a new world of college football. Plenty of great food and alcohol. You will be "Tiger Baited" a few times but it is in good fun. As long as you are friendly, you will have a great time.
Welcome!

LSU folks will treat you well. Stop by any tailgates that smell good and they will offer you some food and drink.

Great tips, but 6-7 AM!? Damn. I'd have to be on the road by 4:30 or 5 after a night of partying in NOLA. That would be tough. How early do I need to get into the stadium for "pre-game?" I did visit Mike's habitat when I was down there for a baseball game a couple of years ago. Very cool.

Definitely don't mind receiving "friendly shite" when on the road. That's expected. Just not a fan of Philadelphia-level abuse.
