I know not saints talk, but that stadium & attendance is horrible, what’s the plus side of them being in LA?

They thought LA could handle two markets but were sorely mistaken

I actually feel sorry for the Chargers players. It was like this in San Diego too. So many opposing fans in your home stadium. Sad. Spanos is a horrible owner & the franchise is just a mess. They have no real fans in L.A.

The short version:

1) Chargers wanted a new stadium in SD. Spanos, owner, said that he could not compete without new stadium money.

2) San Diego County had a vote that was lining up to be unpopular for funding the stadium.

3) SD and Oakland had a dual proposal to move to LA. This was passed on by the NFL in favor of Stan Kronke moving the Rams back to LA.

4) NFL agreed to let SD come back to LA also thinking that it would sway the vote in San Diego...use it as leverage.

5) San Diego County voted down the proposed tax increase for the stadium.

6) Butthurt he moved the team.

7) They are playing in Carson until the new stadium is built.

Attendance doesn’t really matter. It’s about ad revenue for television.

They thought they would still have the San Deigo fanbase who would make the trip to L.A but they were wrong. They were shady. Them failing was funny to watch, they even trotted L.T to talk up the Chargers. That Chargers will always be San Diego but just support them now.

They think the situation will improve once the new stadium is built.

I'm really surprised that the Bolts aren't playing at the Rose Bowl. Why don't they play at the Rose Bowl?

They need to send the Raiders back to LA and move the chargers to Vegas.

Is their presence in L.A. suddenly attracting a much larger TV audience?

I think a portion of it is actually a ploy by the league, where they figure that if they have a team in LA every week (the eventual projected split with Rams/Chargers alternating in the same stadium) and LA as a tourist destination, I think the Chargers ownership and the league don't particularly care if the crowd at Chargers games is 80% Steelers or visiting fans. They are still selling tickets, especially on the secondary market where now on the Stubhubs and Seatgeeks the team itself gets a second cut of the resale prices.

I think on some level it's partially geared towards Packers, Steelers, Patriots, Cowboys, teams like that who have fan bases who travel well, or nationally spread-out fan bases all over. Tickets in their home stadiums are expensive and hard to get, so those visiting team fan bases will do great in Los Angeles.

Similar idea for putting the Raiders in Vegas -- the idea is not really that the homebody citizens of Las Vegas will support the team, but the team will be supported by the tourism industry and high rollers, casinos, visiting big money types, hotels giving away tickets as expensive perks, etc.

I had a Patriots fan from Boston sitting next to me at a Pats game in the Dome a few years ago, and he said to me, other than a preseason game, this was the only way he would ever get to see Brady and the Pats in person, tickets to Gilette were unobtainable and too expensive on the secondary market.... Visiting fans will travel, and to the owners and the NFL, it's all about butts in seats, at higher and higher prices, so they are really fine with it.

Spanos may be terrible but he was right about the stadium he had in SD... it was

A) unbelievably shitty and

b) not at all convenient to where people actually live in SD

Same as in College football. AD's don't GAS if you come or not, and in fact would prefer you didn't. TV contracts are the $$$$. Old farts buying season tickets are just a bonus.

The NFL is desperate to have a successful franchise in LA.
