UCLA athletics $18.9 million deficit in FY 19

After seeing the income statement breakdown by sports I’m shocked that elite football coaches don’t make 25 million a year. If your football team sucks you’re going to struggle to cover all of the handouts on campus, particularly if you’re not in a conference like the SEC with revenue sharing and huge tv deals.

How did athletics departments balance the books when the tv contracts weren’t so massive?

We hired guys like Curly Hallman and Gerry Dinardo. We paid assistant coaches just a little more than high school coaches.

It's because they pay for every imaginable sport known to mankind, it's also why they have more National Titles than any other school.
Title IX is killing them financially.

Men's soccer, M/W water polo, and rowing are their extra teams. Not bringing in any money but not exactly huge spenders. Ucla is cheap with facilities so that probably covers those 4 programs alone.

Or they've changed coaches in both major sports which has cost more than $16 million. They cannot sell seats in football or basketball: In 2010 they sold $25 million in tickets - now it's $17 million.
They have increased their spending on food for athletes by $4 million in 3 years.

The school is in Bel Air. Why the problem UCLA??????
USC is basically in the worst part of LA,they seem to be doing fine.

UCLA and the PAC12 spend a ton of money on Olympic and women’s sports. These sports don’t generate much revenue, but they cost a lot, especially when the teams travel all over the country for both regular season and post-season competition.
Conference realignment and super conferences have also increased travel budgets for schools. It used to be a lot cheaper to hop on a bus and drive from Tuscaloosa to Starkville for a double-header baseball game. Now there’s also a softball team that has to fly from Columbia, SC to Columbia, Missouri and stay in a hotel for a couple of nights.
Most schools have eliminated some of these sports because of cost and requirements of Title IX. The PAC-12 prides itself on the quality of their second tier sports.
UCLA has 14 Women’s sports. Teams in the SEC have only 10 or 11.
Coaches salaries, support personnel, and facility upgrades have exploded across college athletics. Schools are quickly spending the extra revenue TV is generating.
The PAC-12 doesn’t generate nearly as much revenue from TV and Football ticket sales as the SEC or B10.

Sounds like Title IX doin' work out west.

Simple product of too many sports and title IX. UCLA should be cutting sports but we know California only knows one way out of deficits. Expect tuition increases at UCLA...aka “raising taxes”.

Along with coaches salaries and facility upgrades.

UCLA men's and women's water polo left the state once each during their season. Rowing will go to the east coast once and once to Vegas. The sports they have that most others don't, don't travel all over the country because of the majority of the schools participating in that sport are right around them.

UCLA's multiple national title winning softball coach makes bottom of the SEC money. Their stadium is a dump. It's an even larger disparity in baseball.
It's the first loss since 2004, a year when they were also still paying out to newly fired basketball and football coaches.

Facitlty upgrades are an investment for universities though. Paying salaries of non revenue generating women sports are not.
