Why has this never happened? I’m not talking about a Korn Ferry Tour Event. A true open where anyone can qualify for it in qualifiers like Texas does with the Texas State Open. It’s put on by the North Texas PGA and the purse is HUGE. Here is last years purse it paid 63 places:
1 $41,000.00
2 $21,000.00
3 $15,500.00
4 $12,000.00
5 $10,000.00
6 $8,500.00
7 $7,500.00
8 $6,500.00
9 $5,750.00
10 $5,000.00
11 $4,500.00
12 $4,000.00
13 $3,750.00
14 $3,500.00
15 $3,250.00
16 $3,000.00
17 $2,750.00
18 $2,500.00
19 $2,400.00
20 $2,300.00
It cost $500 for Pros and $400 for Ams. Field is full at 156 players.
No reason the Gulf States PGA couldn’t create this with sponsors. It would be great for the state.
If I end up back in Louisiana in golf I am going to try to get this going.

Where will it be held? How’s the qualifying?
I’m in either way.

Qualifying at around 7-8 sites. Around 10-20 each site depending on field sizes. Top 20 pros previous year auto in. Top 10 gulf states pga in points in. Top 10 ams in previous.
It would be held at the top courses in the state each year.

If an Am finishes well, say top 10, what do they get? $20K in pro shop credit?
Pretty sure they couldn't take a check.

They would get max. I think Texas does a $750 gift certificate.

There was a state open years ago, in the 60's and early 70's for sure; don't know when it was discontinued ,as I moved out of state in 72.
In the 60's it was played at Webb a few times, then at a course in New Iberia a couple of years, then went to a course in New Orleans that I can"t remember, and was played in Shreveport a couple of years.
I suspect the emergence of the mini-tours back then had a lot to do with some state opens going away, and the fact that the La. Open was never held on any good courses.

I played in the Louisiana Open back in the day. It was an open but mainly Louisiana pros and ams. Never forget playing behind Mr. Lionel at Les Vieux Chenes in Lafayette, not long after it opened. The LA Open ended up being taken over as a minitour event with the tour. The "Mississippi Open" has become the Trustmark Invitational which is open to most all MPGA and amateurs in the state. The GSPGA runs the Trustmark.

Side note, has anyone heard anything about the LGA moving tournaments/qualifying?

They sent out an email earlier in the week.
