MLS just released this: LINK
MLS clubs were already splitting off and taking some other clubs with them.

Major League Soccer today announced it will launch a new elite youth competition platform which will provide year-round high-level matches for MLS club academy teams and non-MLS academy teams that previously participated in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. The new platform will provide elite competition against domestic and international teams, and MLS is evaluating expanding participation to include clubs beyond the former Development Academy.

The new platform will include league season matches and both regional and national tournaments with international teams. It will also expand coaching education and improve the approach to player identification to ensure top players have the opportunity to participate in a high-level development environment.

In addition, MLS is evaluating the potential to provide future competition opportunities for girls.

US Soccer also just fired Brian Remedi (Chief Stakeholder Officer/interim Chief Administrative Officer/CEO) and Tonya Wallach (Chief Talent and Inclusion Officer).

I don’t even know if the firings are a good thing but I’m inclined to think cleaning house is for the better.

Blames Covid but do you think they are using that as cover?
No. As we discussed in a previous thread a few days ago, the DA shutting down had been in the works for many years. The fact that MLS is immediately announcing this tells me that this announcement was probably gonna happen after the 2020 season anyways. The virus just killed the DA immediately instead of slowly.
This is something MLS teams have planned for a while. It'll be an few years before we start to see this new model's final form take shape. But my guess is it'll operate just like an expanded version of the DA with more regional competitions to reduce travel costs. Probably MLS and USL academy teams, along with many of the good non pro-affiliated academies like PA Classics that were already in the DA. It mentions more international competition, so likely competition with Mexican academies, as well.
Ultimately, this is a good thing. Our academy infrastructure has progressed tremendously in the last 20 years, and this new model is just the next step.

I think Wallach was just hired within the last two years.

This is a good thing - much better model to develop our kids this way

Sure, if the organization implementing the model is stable amidst a pandemic.
MLS is not that.

Huh? How has MLS been any different during the pandemic than any other league?

They don't have the money compared to the other leagues.

Whether or not they are stable is yet to be seen, but this isn’t MLS circa 2000 so I think they will be ok.

They are better off than some European clubs. How often do we see clubs in Europe that have trouble paying their players even without a global pandemic?
