Nintendo 2Ds xl vs 3Ds

Looking to get something for my 5 year olds birthday. Some of her friends have the 3DS and I think she’d use it.
That said, my wonderful wife ordered a 2Ds XL by mistake. We’ll send it back and exchange it, but at first glance there doesn’t seem to be a huge difference between the two.
Can anyone tell me the differences?

2DS is probably better for a 5 year old anyway. The 3d is cool but you have to fiddle with it and would probably annoy a small child

Do people actually like the 3D on the 3DS? I always remember it hurting tf out of my eyes. Mind you, this was with the original 3DS and not the XL. Not sure if they made it better with the XL.
