"Friends" concluded its original run in 2004, less than 2 decades ago. Not quite as legendary as Seinfeld, but quite successful nonetheless. At the time each series stopped the production of new content, both were hailed as having been 2 of the better comedies ever aired on network television. Especially Seinfeld, which many people consider to have been the best comedy ever produced by any network.

But could these two shows, which happened to feature "all-white" recurring casts, even be allowed on television in 2021? Think about it. Not only was every major character white, but they were also straight. Simply put, there is no way that a television show like Seinfeld or Friends could debut in its original form today. They would have to make Kramer black, or Chandler an Hispanic tranny. At a minimum. Monica & Rachel would probably be in a lesbian "marriage" now.

Is this anybody's idea of real progress? Welcome to the dumbing down of America. Obtw, it's only going to get worse.

I am surprised the people who control the reruns don't colorize somebody and change the dialog like the idiots want to take Trump out of Home Alone.

Rachel as a sassy sista

I know you di-unt Ross.

I’m watching Seinfeld on Hulu with my 16 and 14 year old.

They love it. We are almost done with Season 4.

We skipped Master of My Domain. Because mom said no way.

Seinfeld is one of those “right places right time” scenarios, as it was both influential in storytelling as well as given time by NBC to find its footing before it really started to take off a few seasons in.

Much like Cheers, The Seinfeld Chronicles would have been cancelled after a few episodes today because it didn’t immediately find an audience.

Friends? That one is a little weirder. While they would want to make it more multi-ethnic, part of why it worked was that most if not all the main cast was floating around Hollywood and New York and known to be good but hadn’t been put in the right show yet.

For example, Matt LeBlanc had been a semi-regular on Married With Children for years as well as a failed spinoff called Top Of The Heap.

David Schwimmer was doing appearances on shows like NYPD Blue so casting directors knew him and he had gotten major TV exposure. Etc.

Today, Friends would probably resemble something like The Simple Life where they threw a couple rich kids with connected parents together in hopes of a success.

WE'RE NOT GAY!!!!!! Not that there's anything wrong with that

^even that wouldn't be enough for today's woke society.

They also wouldn't like that the only real black cast member was a crooked, greedy lawyer.

Definitely couldn't have an episode entitled "The Chinese Restaurant"

I never got into Seinfeld but I was a big fan of Friends. No way could it debut today because it was actually funny.

But it was at their expense because they were nerdy losers. So it's ok.

Seinfeld definitely couldn't have done the Jackie character. Even though it was based straight off Johnny Cochran, it's too much of a caricature for today.
