For work purposes, I have to take a two week cross country, 3-city trip in June (week in CA and week in NV). Will have to check a bag (I plan on washing clothes after the first week).

Usually I fly Southwest when I need to check a bag, and something like Sprint or Frontier when I don't.

For this kind of work travel, I'm basically given a per diem to include travel costs, and I get to keep what I don't have to spend.

Just trying to see if I have any other free baggage options besides Southwest. Thanks!

If you have the airline credit card or status, then yes.

If not, then generally no if you're buying basic economy fares.

Regular fares will have bags included in the price.

Southwest is doing the same thing, they just don't separate it out. "Bags fly free" is good marketing, but not entirely true.

I hear this a lot, but I also see in many cases, the Southwest fare is less than other airlines, who also charge extra for bags, especially on shorter flights in the south.

Sometimes they win, sometimes they don't. They may have a better operation to cut costs but you're absolutely paying for the bags. You can't fly an airplane with 3,000 extra lbs and eat the cost

What's actually happening is everyone is paying for bags whether you checked some or not. The same thing happens when you pay cash at a store. The prices are set to recoup the credit card fee, so if you don't use a card, you're getting hosed.

A great marketing campaign that works well.

You should be able to get a weeks worth of gear into two carry on pieces. I do it all the time for international travel. Invest in a decent backpack and a roller, backpack goes under seat and roller goes in bin. If you need more than suit or jacket, wear one tailored jacket to fly and put the other one in the roller. One pair of business shoes, one pair of casual shoes. Everything you pack must coordinate color/style wise (aka capsule wardrobe). If you wanna be ultra light, you can buy toiletries at your destination. Organize with packing cubes to keep the clean and dirty separate if you need to repack before you do laundry.

Travelpro roller in the ultralight line means you can cram more weight/stuff into the case...
