I will start on the 27th. I know the conservatory isn't recognizing thru hikes this year, but if I finish it thats what it is about

My cousin is attempting this year too, he's starting in August and going southbound though.
ETA: talked to him again, I got the dates wrong, he's starting at the beginning of July.

Georgia section has been nice so far this year. With the nice weather, Id get out there ASAP if you can. It was starting to get crowded last weekend

Not possible, but I will be a couple of weeks ahead of the trail days bubble.

This. Let's hear it OP?
ETA: Also your own weight. Make sure to weight yourself. I don't care about that though.

it will be in the 25 to 27 lb range.
According to whiteblaze around the 10th of April is the suggested time to leave to hit trail days. I am not really that interested in it.

That's an odd time to start hiking through dec or jan in the smokies.

How bad can the weather get on this hike? Any concerns about that?
Posted on 3/4/21 at 7:33 pm to Paul Allen
You will see it all, rain (you can't make it to Maine if you don't hike in the rain) snow, fog, hot, humid, mosquito swarms. When you make it to VA you can send your cold gear home to lighten your pack for the hot months and then have it mailed back for the last leg of it in the NE.

You got a trail name?
Are you going to post updates anywhere? (TD, IG, YouTube, Trailjournals, etc)
If you haven't already, check out Appalachian Trials by Zack Davis. A pretty good mental prep for a thru hike, so I hear. I'm still on chapter 1.
Good luck out there.

Good luck! You should keep us updated here.

The most disgusting smelly place I have ever been is the Appalachian Trail Center in Harpers Ferry, WV. Pack soap, laundry detergent, and deodorant. It will be worth the weight.

What pack you got? What’s your camp consist of? Which stove and water supplies are you using.
I bought a Gregory 65l and my hammock setup. With a fly, hammock, netting, tree straps, extra cord and underquilt, it’s a bit heavier than a tent, but I prefer it over tent and ground camping. Quality of sleep is much better (for me) in a hammock. Still haven’t bought a stove (can’t decide on one).

awesome dude. Have fun, take your time, and keep us all posted. I'm 53 now and still have young kids so not sure I will ever get this in but I enjoy reading the journals and watching the videos.
