This happened to a friend of mine. Had a poor experience and wrote a one-star review for a local business. The owner threatened legal action and then the credit card profile through the business, Square, was updated to read "Do Not Serve" as the e-mail address.

If this is standard practice will this business:
A) Continue to exist
B) Eventually shut down as word about these types of practices spread

How did they know it was your friend? Why did he put his real name down?

Most people use real names on Google reviews.

I'd have to have the details of his "experience" to decide.

If you had a legit one-star experience somewhere why would you ever return?

I’ve left two in my lifetime and will never do business with either again.

Suckers. I’m Tim Taylor, local Michigan TV star, and your avocado toast had a hair in it.

Was it a legitimate horrible experience? One star means the staff was fighting with you or gave you raw chicken or something IMO

People work had as hell to get a small business up and running for someone to ruin them financially due to an annoyance

Yeah, if it was a "there weren't enough ice cubes in my merlot" complaint, I can see why they'd be pissed, but if it was a "we waited 45 minutes before someone came to the table" complaint, that's way overboard.

What does this mean? Is it supposed to be a message to other business owners?

Has anyone experienced the results of this or know somebody who has?

I don’t see a public backlash occurring over this. What’s the complaint? That a business decides they don’t want a customer who advises others not to do business? That seems logical.

Owner has a pretty firm grasp on legal matters it appears.

Customer had a food allergy, asked the store if the item did or did not contain the allergy-triggering item, store said it was safe and mixed in the item, turns out store was wrong.

Without knowing more it is hard to say.

But unless they said something outright slanderous or provably wrong, this seems like overboard by the business.

seems silly as the customer is unlikely to return and also, wouldn't the "do not serve" thing only pop up after services were rendered and payment is due?

Yeah, that's pretty egregious

Your "friend" needs to update the 1 star review and explain how the business is treating them after the review.
