Looking for some ideas on a honeymoon. Fiance wants South Africa with a Safari, but quotes we are getting are $10,000+. Hard to imagine spending that much, but also want it to be an epic trip. Any suggestions?

How much do you usually spend in a year on vacations?
Talk with fiancée about whether you’d rather one epic trip, or to have several very nice trips during the first few years of marriage.
Discuss expectations for how you decide to spend $10k......this is an important part of marriage prep: getting on the same page about money.

Can you give a ballpark on what you’d like to spend?

10 grand
Put that into a house

Do you want a honeymoon where you are doing stuff non stop or do you want a honeymoon where you can relax and unwind a little bit? After the wedding we were exhausted from all the buildup of it are you traveling immediately after wedding? All things to consider

We didn’t overdo our honeymoon and we tried to just spend some quality time together with excursions mixed in just enough of both to make it a memorable trip

S Africa seems you would need another vacation to recover when you get back

My wife and I went to Japan and it was the best trip of my lifetime. We organized our trip around climbing mt fuji and biking the shimanami kaido bike trail. Both proved to be bucket list experiences. Beyond that we mostly soaked in onsens, ate great food and did some site seeing in kyoto.

Japan is such an effortless country to explore thanks to the rail system and the food is great everywhere. Once you are there I found prices to be comparable to traveling in Europe, except you can eat well in Japan for less than Europe. I think we probably spent about $12,000 all in. I would love to do a second trip and explore Japan north of Tokyo and hokkaido.

I only have 2k. Can I get a few pieces of sushi there and a samurai show?

I haven't been, but my understanding is that there are options for every budget at Kruger National Park in South Africa.

I mean, you can rent a jeep from Johannesburg, drive yourself to the part in 4 and a half hours, and then drive around the park yourself and stay in bungalows that cost $60 per night, while cooking food that you bought at a grocery outside the park.

That's the other extreme. There are lots of options in between. I don't think that you need to spend $10,000 to have a good trip.

You could fly to Narita airport, eat some sushi, ride the high speed rail and use the incredible bidet toilets a few times. I say worth it just for the toilets alone.

I do echo what the other poster said about needing a second trip to recover from jet lag if you go South Africa. Work the week after our honeymoon was truly brutal. For that reason if you are limited on time but want to “go somewhere far” consider South America. Much of it is the same time zone as EST

If you do a safari in Africa you want a proven tour company there. It's not a trip to pinch pennies on.

That's not bad for two people. How many animals can you kill? Are you both hunting or just one? My wife would never let me pull that shite off.

I'd say 6-8K. We aren't sit on a beach all day couple, I'll do that in Florida. We are all about experiences. I really want to Cage Dive with Great White Sharks.

A trip to Vancouver island can be done really well at that price range and it’s terrific option. You can take a seaplane from Seattle to Victoria. On the island you can do all kinds of outdoorsy activities or just enjoy meander and relax in a beautiful setting. One of the prettiest places I’ve ever been and nice people.

That’s not a bad budget to work with, but yeah I’d agree it’s not enough for a proper South Africa trip.

What about doing something like Lima and hiking Macchu Picchu if you’re into an active experience?

It's been a couple years since I've been to South Africa but I definitely think it can be done by staying at a private game reserve for under $10k

I know we spent less than $10k on ours but we didnt spend the entire time at the reserve. We spent some time in London before flying to S Africa, then flew from there to Cape Town and spent some time there then jumped over to Port Elizabeth and from there made our way to the reserve) where we spent a week. We spent some time in London on the way back too.

We stayed here and loved it...it was about a two hour drive from Port Elizabeth, smaller and more intimate than Kruger and I cannot say enough about the entire staff. Now, we did have enough people to rent our private house on the reserve (Homesetad) so that dropped the price a bit for us but I still think it can be done for under $10k.

I think we factored it out to be around $350 per person per night when it was all said and done...and that was all food, drink, alcohol, etc. Shopping and massages/spa, etc was obviously additional

Do you currently scuba dive? If not, I'd pick some place close that can give you introduction to scuba. (can provide suggestions if you're interested) You can also start take a dive with carribean reef sharks... with now cage.

It's pretty amazing to be down 50' and have 10 to 12 reef sharks glide past within reach (not advisable, to touch them though). Once you do that, then you can gauge how interested your are sitting in a cage as a white shark eats a piece of fish next to you.

Not knowing your financial situation, I'll say this -- some people will say to spend as little money now as possible when just starting out. Get the house and plan ahead. My suggestion -- set an annual budget for time and money to spend travelling, and go do it together. Have fun while you're young and kid free.
