Two weeks ago were 700-800. Now 1300-1500. Anything happen that would change prices so quickly?

I'm not sure but I was trying to plan a trip to Greece and everything I was reading said it was still closed to all US citizens. Did something change recently?

When are you going? Airlines like everyone run specials and push certain times all the time. If you are looking at 60-90 day time period then the sooner it is the more flights are inside of that window generally. As far as further out then that, then yes it was probably a temporary deal.

This is pretty normal man.

Prices for Europe fluctuate, and especially for places like Greece.

You will see airlines running specials in the 600-800 range and then back up to "regular" price.

Don't worry, just monitor the prices and they will be down again. And when you see a price you like...book it!

Government officials have stated they will allow vaccinated and tested individuals to enter starting in May. Subject to change.

20% of Greece's economy is tourism and they had no season last year.

UPDATE: news changes fast, they now say they will allow starting next week.

wow, changes really fast...I checked this morning on the embassy website Here and it said that NO travelers from the US were allowed only under special circumstances.

quote:

Are U.S. citizens permitted to enter? No
Greece will currently only allow EU citizens, EU residents, and residents of certain other specific countries to enter. The United States is not one of those countries. U.S. citizens traveling to Greece will not be permitted to enter unless they meet one of only a few narrow exceptions detailed in the Greek Embassy’s information on entrance into the European Union/Schengen Area. There is no projected date when entry will be permitted.

Guess I'll hop back on planning my trip too.

Ya, they want to do a test run leading up to May 14 and the US is on the short list.

Just book beyond that date by a little bit. It looks like their cases are falling so you'd probably catch a lull and less restrictions around June to July, but that's me just guessing.

Also, I wouldn't expect the US embassy site to update until the new practice is actually happening. They don't seem to update for anticipated changes planned ahead.

Fly to a major European city and take a cheap flight into Santorini.

We are flying for a wedding the week before Labor Day. I was just monitoring 2 weeks ago and it was much cheaper. Heck even yesterday my friend said they booked their flight at $800.

I will continue to monitor. Thanks!

You say this like it's 2019

Here's another recommendation. I strongly advise whatever flights you're thinking of booking that you review the flight numbers against a site like Flightaware and see what dates that flight is flying presently. This is because the future loaded schedules are very optimistic and are later culled due to demand.

Hypothetical: COVID Airlines has two flights a day showing between NYC and Athens. A morning and afternoon flight. Morning flight # is 1234. Afternoon is 5678.

You need to pump in those flight numbers and see what days they are flying right now. That will give you some confidence that they will fly those specific days 2/3 months from now in the high season.

It is very common for #1234 to fly S/M/Th and #5678 to not be flying at all, but both being offered every day 3 months from now. I wouldn't bank on it.

Haha, fair.

OP, set a Google alert on price changes. In ‘19 ( ) my flight from JFK>Athens was hovering in the $1,200 range for a long time. I booked at ~$420.

Ya, it's a mess. I speak from experience having a flight canceled. Figured out what the deal was and now feel much better.

Of course, my flight schedule isn't what I would have booked pre-COVID, but I have to play the cards dealt.

Hope they open up for you by then. I'm doing my wedding in St. John because at the time, no one else had really opened their boarders to the US.
