Hawaii COVID mask restrictions

Anyone know how strict they are being on masks there? Specifically Maui and Kauai. Will be there after they reach herd immunity this summer but their governor is a complete Biden sycophant.

I can live with that. Just hoping they aren't pussies and give citations because I'm at the beach without a mask on.

No masks at the beach. Some wear them walking to their spot, but not everyone. Definitely err on the side of wearing it though.
We were in the Safeway parking lot in Kihei and my husband didn't have his pulled up because he just wasn't thinking. He got a few glares. That was the only "negative" experience we had.

My understanding is very very strict. Have to have them in public even most places outside.

It's not that bad. People walk, run, bike, etc without them. Nobody wears them once parked in a spot at the beach, and regulars don't wear them walking to a spot although depending on the beach, I could see that being frowned on. Took a sunset cruise, nobody wore one unless going inside. There's no "mask patrol" going around writing citations, at least not on Maui in Wailea/Kihei in March. But things change fast.

Make sure your covid testing site is an approved one. Not sure what that entails exactly, but apparently it's another thing they are strict about. Neighbor's kid just got married, tried to go on his honeymoon there, and was turned away at the airport b/c the testing he and the new wife got was not approved. Definitely something to doublecheck

I didn't run into any of that late last year. Every restaurant did contact tracing and limited people to groups of 5. Even if you all came together.
The biggest thing is using an approved testing site within the time constraint, like someone else already said. Also, you're treated like an inmate when you land until you are processed and prove you don't have covid.

I hope things change by the end of the month... I'm not vaccinated and neither is the wife (no pics) but we are getting tested at a Walgreens in BR before leaving.
Can a rapid test or work or do I need one of the ones that take a day or two to come back?

Walgreens is an approved testing site for Hawaii. So, you should be good.
Every adult traveling will need to create an account beforehand and you'll upload your test result there as well.

Hawaii Safe Travels website has a list of approved tests. Walgreens red dot test seems to be the easiest accepted nationwide brand if it's available. I canceled my trip for next week to Maui/Kauai, the testing requirements and inability to get cars, reservations, constantly shutting down attractions due to COVID crowding weren't worth the 12 hours on a plane. Sounds like they're optimistic about opening to vaccinated travelers sometime next month, so hoping to reschedule for later this year.

What airline are you flying?

Walgreen's has two rapid tests. Binax is NOT accepted. Their NAAT rapid test (ID Now) is accepted. It's easy, and it's free.
