I cannot more highly recommend a vacation. Hiked 50 miles over 5 days, including an 18 mile day with 5,000 feet elevation gain & 5000 feet loss.

Nobody is there right now because of Covid restrictions. Weather is unreal.

Yosemite
Mount Rushmore of National Parks. I did the Mist Trail. What a day, I never forget that or Glacier Point.

Little known fact. I was going to be the first to free solo El Cap but I then realized I cannot even do more than 3 pullups.

We didn’t do the Mist Trail but did everything else. Hiked from Glacier Point to Nevada Falls (top of Mist Trail and back). What a day that was.

We have permits for Half Dome later this summer. Looking forward to it.

Mintberry, if you don't mind me asking your input/opinion. We fly in Monday and have all day Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to go around the park. Fly out Saturday. it's myself, wife and 3 kids aged 13,11 and 9. ( year old is in a cast on his right hand due to fracturing a bone in his elbow (to factor out strenuous hikes).

Was thinking 2 days exploring the valley, vernal fall footbridge, lower yosemite falls trail, sentinel/cooks meadow loop, mist trail. mirror lake and artist point (bridaveil trail is current closed).

Was going to hit glacier point one day, sentinel dome and taft point , was thinking about fitting in mariposa groove, but, with the shuttle not running may be too long of a walk?

last day hitting olmstead point, tenaya lake and tuolumne meadows. If mariposa groove isn't doable, may fit in tuolumne grove to see some of the sequoias.

Do you think this is a good rough plan, anything i should remove or add?

On night we will hit either El Cap valley or glacier point for star gazing.

We have a house in Yosemite West.

That is where we stayed. Man it was so nice to go back to a nice home after a long day.

Definitely go to Mariposa Grove if possible, it is just an incredible display of trees and a easy walk if you park close.

You pass the Vernal Falls footbridge on the way to the Mist Trail...that may be a long day in itself t it might take 6 hours round trip to Nevada Falls.

Glacier Point views are other worldly. Looks like the road is now open so it gives you options.

Yosemite, for me, is one of if not the best place I have ever been.

Thanks for the info CrowPie. Mariposa shuttle to the trailhead is not running, so you walk 1.5 miles to the trail, which I believe is 4 miles. So around 7 miles total, just wondering if that may be too much at once for the kids.

Probably would be fine now that i think about it, they did 10-15 miles a day for 5 straight days at Disney

fwiw Mariposa Grove is infinitely easier than the trip to Vernal/Nevada Falls.

We stayed in Wawona. It was awesome but was a little far away.

I would start with sunrise at Glacier Point for the kids. It’s right there and is special for first timers. The sun hits the highest peaks first... might not be appreciated by kids. Oh well. Anyways, I’d do Glacier Point on Day One. I’d hike the Senitnel Dome/Taft Point loop that morning. The Taft Point out and back was the best bang for your buck hike we did. I’d hit Mariposa Grove that evening. The handicapped lot is guarded by unmanned gates. Just drive up to the gate, press the button, and drive up the hill. Many did it when we went, nobody was handicapped.

The next day I’d do the valley. Stop for tunnel view of course. Bridalveil falls is closed but you can pull over after it and get a good picture if desired. Do lower Yosemite falls. Go to the valley store if you need anything-it’s a full grocery store. Might want to do Mirror Lake, as it is a gentle uphill hike to a cold island lake at the base of Half Dome. Get lunch. Go to Curry Village and hike to the Mist Trail. Hike as far up as you want. Top of Nevada Falls is beautiful (I accessed it form Panorama Trail out and back). If you want a good view of Nevada without the full climb, Clark Point is also an incredible vantage point. Give the kids $50 to get a dinner at Degnans and go get drinks at the ahwahnee.

I missed Artist Point. I’d go if I were you. It’s probably very quiet.

I wa supposed to spend two full days on Tioga Road but got shortened to a day due to opening one day later than I planned for. I’d spend two days up there if I were you. I’d spend all week up there myself. North Dome would be a cool hike to see Half Dome from straight across.

The drive up Tioga Road is so nice and seems short for an hour and a half or two hour drive. Olmsted point is nice but it’s a pull-over. Won’t be there very long. Tenaya Lake is badass but being next to the road means it’s not too secluded. I’d hike Pothole Dome around to the Tuolumne River by the edge of the meadow. It’s short.

I would strongly recommend Lower Cathedral Lake hike off Tioga Road. The first 1 mile is uphill, but it is easy after that and is incredibly worth it. I’d hike straight there on your Tioga Road day and spend all day there. You get a great view of Tenaya but from above. It’s not too taxing for a 9 year old even with a broken arm.

I did stargazing at Taft Point and would recommend the same. The walk back isn’t bad in the dark - they have reflectors to find the way with flashlights.

I tell people that if you have one day in the park, hike Panorama Trail from Glacier Point to the Mist Trail and take the shuttle back. Shuttles are shut down, so you have to hike back now. I wouldn’t recommend it for your kids. Wife and I did it last week. I’m 32 and in hiking shape, she isn’t. Took us 10 hours round trip but was incredible.

Mariposa Grove - visit in evening and the handicapped gates will be unmanned. Press the button, drive up the hill. Grizzly Giant will be less than a half mile away.

We were the only people there last Monday evening .

Great pic of the Grizzly Giant. I remember it as a lot bigger in person than that pic shows with no one in the frame for scale.
