Any experiences with Yellowstone in the winter? Thinking the lower crowds and snow may be a pretty good trip for the family.

I believe it is closed in the winter.

Only access is to Mammoth Hot Springs by car and the snow coach after that. Cross country skiing and maybe some snow mobile access. CC Lockwood used to take a photography group there every year after New Years, but that was 30 years ago.

Roads in the park are closed during the winter months.

Mammoth to Northeast entrance is open year round. Much of the rest of the park is accessible by snowmobile or snow coach.
I’d also like to see it during the winter.

My favorite time to go to Yellowstone is early to mid-October. Bring snow chains just in case. Park is mostly open and the crowds are non-existent. Animals are everywhere and on the move. Gone as late as October 28th-30th but it gets dicey with the weather and the park service only focus on maintaining the main roads in/out and the loop. Some other roads not maintained as often "require" vehicles to have snow chains to go on in October.

IF you wait until the snow really hits then you are going to be limited to a very controlled tour on a snowmobile, snowcat, etc..

Basic rule of thumb if you can get to the park 3 weeks before school is out or 3 weeks after the kids go back to school the crowds are gone.

Only time I been there was winter. Stayed in Jackson Hole. Took snow mobile tour. Was great. Also elk refuge. Much cheaper in winter as well.

The snow is literally 10 ft high much of winter. As said the park is mostly closed outside of snowmobile tours, skiing tours, and some other snow based stuff.

It would be a lot of fun to visit, but its a completely different animal in the winter. Its not just the same park with a little snow and lesser crowds, far from that.

It’s fun, but everything in the park is guided. It’s a Clinton era mandate.

Do the snowmobile tour, but I’d also look at renting a snowmobile outside of the park as well.

I got back a week ago today. Want to go in the winter myself but it's not real easy. When I left last Monday at 3pm, it was 37 degrees with a mixture of sleet and snow hitting my face.

With that said, they are well prepared for conditions and roads are maintained year round.

I’ve done the same with dog sledding as well. Great trip

We go up for Christmas every year. Have done a couple of snowmobile trips in and it was a lot of fun. Jackson Hole at Christmas is like a throwback to a much simpler time.

Started going because of in laws coming in and staying with us for 2 weeks at Christmas. They are shopaholics and were at the mall, target, Walmart, Academy, Fry's etc... every day almost and then jumping on the after Christmas sales. I call it commercial chaos. Never again. They hate the cold so that is a plus. Last Christmas it was super cold.... too cold to snow. 4F-12F for a few days. Elk Refuge ride was brutal for anyone not prepared. No blankets due to Covid.... yikes.

We were in Yellowstone Thursday and Friday this past week. Not very crowded at all on the roads or at any sights.

Don’t know if that’s normal crowd for just before Memorial Day weekend.

we went over Christmas when I was a kid. Stayed at some cabins the outfitter had outside of the park. I think goosewing ranch was the outfitter. Did a day trip in the park by snowmobile, which was pretty cool. There was low snow that year though which limited our itinerary from the original plan. Downside is you can't really do your own thing...you just get in the big line of snowmobiles and follow the leader. Very cool to see in winter but that's not my style. I'd do it again but maybe once or twice, not a yearly thing.

It was cold though, which I enjoy but just be aware. Our outfitters rule was it had to get above 0 before we could ride.
