Austria-Hungary Suggestions

Booked a 10 day trip through part of Austria and Hungary looking for recommendations along our itinerary. Days in certain cities have not been set, nor do we really know what to do.
Munich-->Salzburg-->Halstatt-->Vienna-->Budapest
If you have any suggestions on places to go, eat, see, drink I would appreciate it!

I just got back from Austria last week on a 14 day trip that included Greece. We drove to Cesky Krumlov from Vienna, it's just under 3 hours. It's a great town and you can see most of the town center in 1 day. We did a private tour that hit all of the significant parts of the town including the palace. In this part of the world, beer is usually cheaper than water, needless to say I had my fair share.

I casually walked through the old graveyard there and found this Nazi eagle statue (part of a fountain) near it:

Yeah there are a few websites that will steer you toward the remaining eagles and remnants of Nazism if you're into such things (I was, although we didn't venture too far looking for them).
I've done pretty much your trip OP. IMO Vienna is a hard city to crack in just a couple of days. Whereas Salzburg is a great 2-3 day city, I think.
We hired a car to go to Hallstatt which was a good choice in retrospect. Got a lot of intel/stories about the areas we ventured through on the way and our driver had just done the same trip with Clayton Kershaw and wife the week before, which made us feel cool. When we went to Hallstatt it was winter and it was still slammed with Chinese tourists, so anticipate that. He also did mini tours/photo stops of some of the other hot spots in the region, like the Sound of Music overlooks, etc. Allowed us to check the box on a few things we wanted to see but weren't THAT into with limited time.

I am open to spending more time in the salzburg region and visiting Berchtesgaden or more in Budapest.

I've been to Budapest 3 times now and I would say it's my second favorite city in the world next to Prague.
You could spend days there. Here's a link to some selected photos from 2 of the trips.
Plenty or articles on what to do. Here's one.
Fisherman's Bastion area is a must. Take a thermal bath. If you're into history, I LOVED hiring a cab and going out to Memento Park where they literally took a lot of the Soviet era statues and put them in a park to remember that era.
I've been to Vienna twice. In the winter, when the Christmas markets are going, it's magical. Such a huge city.

My wife is also a big SOM fan, I surprised her by having a private all day tour. We even saw the Red Bull corporate headquarters.
I was (and am) somewhat ambivalent to SOM but I played along well because I knew it was important to her and the tour and sites were very interesting.
I don’t know how “open” Vienna is due to the COVID but it’s my personal favorite out of that area, even ahead of Prague.
After I retire, I’m planning on spending weeks in each of those capitol cities. (God willing)

As of last week, no masks in most places if you are vaccinated (must show proof). Of everywhere we went, only Schonbrunn palace and public transportation required masks indoors regardless of vaccination status.

Did this exact itinerary about 5 years ago with day trip Berchtesgaden. It was awesome but the only thing I would change would be more time in Budapest. It was super cool with great nightlife. We were just exhausted by the time we got there and didn’t really have it in us to get the full experience. Will definitely be going back at some point.

In vienna my favorite places are the naschmarkt for evening cocktails, stadtpark to walk around, and the hop on hop off bus line/tour actually surprisingly nice and useful (and I despise touristy stuff). Try and eat some roast duck or goose with knoodl and warm sweet red cabbage. That and goulash (the main not the soup) at a decent restaurant. There’s also some vineyards on outskirts of town and some upper class neighborhoods and at the vineyard they often offer a countryside meal and wine (Huriger think is what they call that type resto). If feeling cultural, think about finding a walking tour about the Hapsburg empire is quite enriching - in USA we aren’t taught much about it and there’s a lot there and Vienna was it’s heart and this brings some of the old ornate architecture to life. Vienna is basically a living museum contrasting the pre and post WW1 European existence and afterwards a central component of east Europe meets west in terms of post WWII geopolitics. It’s a city almost universally loved and respected by foreigners and its own inhabitants, so if at first glance it doesn’t do it for you, shift gears and try a different part of town or activity. There’s more around than just the 1st district.

Dietrich Eckart is buried there also.
I would suggest Neuschweinstein Castle also.
